we don't need rest!!
all I know is two fucking power chords... now what:confused:

I'm gonna quit...take up sky diving or something...

ya try to come up with something, you get two chord crap-o-la. It sounded fun on the headphones cranked the first time...but now that I've heard it about 4 times... it's wanker...

I need writing suggestions!!

well..if Gidge can post his "tripe"...I can post mine;)

well, you could at least comment on my tripe.....

btw, I thought tripe was cow intestines or something of that nature?......

on to your tripe:

there is nothing wrong with your 2 chords.....this sounds like a very powerful introduction into something (with hopefully more than 2 chords):p i see the vocal coming in at :42 (not very radio friendly) and then where you left off, scale it back to that vibe from the very beginning......

good tripe

as soon as this ends, I picture an immediate 'Cranky One' type sound coming in.. loud and proud.. every instrument begins at once.. drums/bass/guitars all pinned.. Instead of getting softer, perhaps it goes into something dramatically loud and heavy..

or

a piano and cello..

or

a big drum fill immediately begins.. a fat one with lots of toms and maybe double bass sounding.. into a 'Cranky One' type sound etc..

or

an organ!

either way it sounds like a decent start/intro..

thanks for the listen guys...but the problem is...this sucks ... yeah..I can add more crap to it... but I won't like it. There's nothing about it except volume loud in headphones that I like about it. I need a vacation... I need to start up the herb again....

buying equipment only makes me feel good for a day... then I wish I didn't spend the money, because all I write is pig intestines..

I need sunshine... I hate winter... I got a Fender T shirt for Christmas.. that was cool...

I hate the blues too. same fucking chords... and I'm not even drunk... argh....

Fuck this shit... I'm going intense with the dog training... my guitars don't even know how to lick me in the face...or smell my crotch... that's love...crotch smellin'

phew....

hey..question... my problem is...I spent about an hour doing this...then by the time the hour is over, I don't like the song anymore. How much does that happen to you guys? I mean.. verse/chorus ditties seem easy to do...but the "good" stuff.... I don't have the patience anymore... burnt around the edges, I guess...

hehe what the hell is wrong with this..?..NOW just play guitar over it for about 4 hrs ...i guarantee youll come up with somethin..thats how i always do it....especially on songs where a certain guitar riff inspires the whole deal...most of my stuff comes about writing lyrics but the last song i posted was just a riff ..and sure it aint great but i turned it into something....sorta...anyway..play play play play ....it should work.

just a thought

Mix, it happens too much to me. Notice that I haven't posted anything original in some time. You see, I love to write and I love to record. The problem is that I all too frequently let my passion for recording pull me into working with a song that isn't finished. End result=garbage.

The only real answer is to work on the craft of songwriting and never even begin to record anything more than a voice/guitar or voice/piano demo until you are sure that what you have written is solid. Usually by that time you have a pretty good vision of where you want to take the material in the recording. Rule of thumb for me is to let something sit for a week or two after its finished. Then I decide if its worth the time to commit to tape/hard drive, etc.

My general feeling is that if it doesn't work with me and my guitar, no amount of studio trickery or polish is gonna make something good out of something bad. Yet, I am still guilty of breaking my own rules, always with the same result--I hate what I'm doing!

Songwriting is like breathing. Sometimes you inhale (no herb implied!:D) and sometimes you exhale. The rest of the time you are just absorbing ideas for the next song. I can't write all the time. Wish I could but it doesn't work that way. When I can't write my way out of a paper bag, I take a break and wait until I feel inspired and fresh again. Usually that helps me.

By doing things like training your dog, you will stumble upon cool ideas that you wouldn't have found otherwise. Sounds weird, but thats how songwriting can be sometimes!

IMO This is a bold thing to state in this extemely varied forum...Every great person ,big and small, goes thru periods of stagnicity,it's that they persist that's sets them apart. To be truely great in the eye's of one person is to be great to the universe. How will they know your potential if you stop to think about selfworth and put down the passion for even a moment.Don't waste these feelings on non-productive things.Just play some fuckin' music you luv!!

I wil now resume my hatefull,self-loathing,selfish,childish,form I am conditioned to.Thank you for your patience.

mix.. just give up and send all your equipment to me... it will be highly therapudic.. I assure you. :p

So anywhey... I have that same problem... I'll write something and play it and it'll sound "great", and then I'll come back the next day and realize that it's a festering pile of horse dung... but hey... every once in a while something worth keeping comes oat and that's all that matters. :p

hey Mix! something amiss?

did you know I stink on the guitar compared to Joe Satriani?
did you know that my mom thinks I play better than Satch :)

music is more relative than E=mc2!

I used to think about the Jones' until I realized the true purpose of music. You play and create music to exercise an area inside yourself that makes you feel good. Ive seen kids around 10 years old playing one chord with the biggest smile I have ever seen... start playing music for yourself not everybody else... play what makes you feel good.. not what everybody else wants to hear... play music for YOU

-- a little tip for sharpening up your writing is to know chords in different areas of the fretboard. If you listen to some of my stuff I always double -- triple my melodies with chords in a higher/lower octave and you can even mess around with different rythm over a melody and tension between notes.. it adds interest to the listener... start humming melodies during the day and then transfering to the fretboard by night.

Oh I have a dog story...
I watch my sister's Yellow lab alot and it is the most unobedient thing I know. It's 2 1/2 yrs old and she brought her back to doggy school because she doesnt listen to anything (but she will sit if you have a doggy treat!) She runs away into the neighbors yard for 10 minutes if you let her loose to play ball...
I think the whole problem is she never has time to spend with her

***edit.... oh... capos are great writing tools... get one

*** If you knew everything and could play everything perfect... this world would be the dryest place for you

Hey Mixmkr, I know 100's of power chords and Im in a rut. Go figure. HAve ya tried droping the low E to low D (drop D) wammo, ya have a bunch more power chords. A different tuning helps a rut also. If that wont help, walk away from it for a while until you have the desire again. Hope this helps.

mix dude, I record everything.. even when I'm just screwing around with the guitar or keys, I am always always in record mode.. sometimes the best riffs only reveal themselves once, so I have to always be ready to press record.. I learned that the hard way, but I usually use everything.. Whether it's good or not is a different story, but I have way over 65 completed songs.. Most of them may suck, but every now and then I'll steal the one good riff from an otherwise crappy song, and start making a new song with all the best parts from the crappy ones..

always be ready to record in an instant..

this intro is no where near bad at all in any way..

so stop it!

Back when I was writing a lot, this happened quite a bit. Unfortunately, you may not know it's a turd until it's too late

And like Sam said, even the worst of the turds have shiny peanuts in 'em that can be re-used in another song...

well... pretty much what he said

Hey, that sounds pretty cool. Where's the rest of the song?

Simple stuff can get to ya playing it over and over again. I think it's a good intro.

The longer I live, the more I realize the impact of attitude on life. Attitude to me is more important than facts. It is more important than the past, than education, than money, than circumstances, than failures, than success, than what other people think or say or do. It is more important than appearance, gift, or skill. It will make or break a company...a church...a home. The remarkable thing is we have a choice every day regarding the attitude we will embrace for that day. We cannot change our past...we cannot change the fact that people will act in a certain way. We cannot change the inevitable. The only thing we can do is play on the string we have, and that is our attitude. I am convinced that life is 10 percent what happens to me and 90 percent how I react to it. And so it is with you... we are in charge of our attitudes.

I used to feel like that, Jeff. Admirable sentiments, actually. But having experienced the "acting" part of that (i.e. "acting" nice when you don't "feel" nice) I must add that being fake, even if it makes others happy, will only hurt in the end.

That's not to say having a positive outlook is bad :) But if you feel shitty, there's no sense hiding it, either :)
