hey..question... my problem is...I spent about an hour doing this...then by the time the hour is over, I don't like the song anymore. How much does that happen to you guys? I mean.. verse/chorus ditties seem easy to do...but the "good" stuff.... I don't have the patience anymore... burnt around the edges, I guess...
Mix, it happens too much to me. Notice that I haven't posted anything original in some time. You see, I love to write and I love to record. The problem is that I all too frequently let my passion for recording pull me into working with a song that isn't finished. End result=garbage.
The only real answer is to work on the craft of songwriting and never even begin to record anything more than a voice/guitar or voice/piano demo until you are sure that what you have written is solid. Usually by that time you have a pretty good vision of where you want to take the material in the recording. Rule of thumb for me is to let something sit for a week or two after its finished. Then I decide if its worth the time to commit to tape/hard drive, etc.
My general feeling is that if it doesn't work with me and my guitar, no amount of studio trickery or polish is gonna make something good out of something bad. Yet, I am still guilty of breaking my own rules, always with the same result--I hate what I'm doing!
Songwriting is like breathing. Sometimes you inhale (no herb implied!

) and sometimes you exhale. The rest of the time you are just absorbing ideas for the next song. I can't write all the time. Wish I could but it doesn't work that way. When I can't write my way out of a paper bag, I take a break and wait until I feel inspired and fresh again. Usually that helps me.
By doing things like training your dog, you will stumble upon cool ideas that you wouldn't have found otherwise. Sounds weird, but thats how songwriting can be sometimes!
