Trailing Behind Again
OK, thinking about getting my second HDD... I can get my hands on a new 120GB Western Digital 7200RPM Ultra DMA HDD.
I have an HP with an AMD Athlon XP3000+ 2.10Ghz processor and 512 RAM. I already have another stick of 512 I am going to drop in there.

The question I have, is do I need to put an OS on the second drive or just format it? I am going to use it as my audio drive, obviously. I was thinking of just putting the bare-bones XP Home on it, and partition it for the OS and the audio.

Which way is the easiest and still best way to do this?

Sorry about the newbie type post. I am pretty good with computers, but far from being an IT guy.

No you don't have to put an OS on the second HDD.

The easiest way would be to install windows xp on one drive power down and then install the second drive windows should automatically pick up the "newly added hardware".

Cool, so I don't need to format it, just install it as a slave, right?

Holy Heyzeus Krist, one I can finally answer..

What he said.
I have two Western Digital drives in mine, 60/120gig.

Do Ultra DMA drive plug into the IDE ribbon cables, or is that a PCI attachment?
Also, I was curious... do the IDE ribbon cables also run off of the same bus as PCI/USB???

EDIT Yes you make it a slave, but first put leather on it and smack it around. They like to be demeaned... :D

The one that is in the pc now is on ribbon cables. I have to look at the WD, but I believe it's ribbon cables too. I am going to install the extra RAM first...

leather and smack it around... got it!

Can answer the first question not the second though....

Ultra DMA drive does plug in with the IDE ribbon cables not a PCI Attachment... I think your thinking of SATA the HDD with the relly thin cord they make motherborads now with those slots on them.

I would guess no for the second question maybe somone with more experience than me will clear it up.

Alright! Now I can go out and get this monster and get it installed. I hope it comes with directions in English. The RAM I bought was out in town. The people who sold it to me didn't speak a word of English. The lady who went with me to get it spoke Japanese, though. So I am pretty certain I got the right one... If it don't work, I am not too concerned. 512MB seems to be enough for what I am doing.

Thanks, Bigwillz. You da man!

And thanks for the spanking tip, Ryan.
That made my day! :D

EDIT: I still have the receipt, so if the RAM isn't right, I can take it back!

You will need to format it, but that should be an easy, automatic thing when you install it. I run 2 120 gig drives on my pc, one master, and one slave. With XP, it SHOULD be automatic. But...

As far as the RAM, anything like pc 2100 or better, should be appropriate.

By the way, Rokket, You live in japan, but where were you born? Just a curiousity.

North Dakota. I am stationed here in the Navy.. For a few more months. I've been over here since 2000, and I hate it sometimes and love it others...

I'm sure you know, but don't forget proper jumper settings.

Speaking of Japan, have you seen "the grudge"?
I thought they could have done it MUCH better, but it was okay (scared the kids!).
They should have prefaced it with Japanese lore, more than they did.

I didn't think it was very scary but I've heard there are two differant versions of the movie. (don't quote me on that cuz i'm not sure)

The japanese & the english version...

It is said the japanese version is way better...

You're right, there are two versions.
Both the American and Japanese versions are directed by the same director, and both are filmed in Japan.

I've seen both. I think the same girl plays the badass ghost in both versions.
The American version is a bit watered down...

North Dakota? That may be one place that gets worse winter weather than Island Park.

SWEET....

Yeah, I thank my lucky stars that I only get to visit in the summer, when the humidity will kill you if the mosquitos don't carry you off!
The winters are brutal...

I moved to Washington when I was 14... Lived north of Spokane until I graduated from highschool and joined the Navy. We lived near a town called Ione. One of those blink and you will miss it passing through it type of towns. Only people passing through going up to Nelson B.C to ski even know where it is...

My parents split a few years ago and my mother moved back to ND. My dad still has a business in Washington.

I was on the other side of the Cascades, but yeah. When I was living there, it was in a box canyon, with mountains on all four sides that have snow all year round. Beautiful country, for sure.

Ok I just did this same thing. I have an 80GB Hitachi (master) and a 120GB Western Digital (slave).

If you want to install OS's on both. You don't want to do it as suggested. If you install 2 OS's you need them to be seperate or the drives will share OS files.

The way to get around this is to remove the master now which has the MBR (master boot record)on it. Put in your new drive. Put your boot disk in (windows install). When the comp starts hit F2.

While your there look for boot sequence.

1.Floppy
2.Hard Drive
3.IDE CD-ROM

Maybe different on yours. Regaurdless move IDE CD-ROM up to #1.

Then press ESC. Save changes and exit.

Then when its at the start-up screen hit F12 (boot options)

It will ask you to strike F1 to continue. Do it.

It will goto a boot screen.

Boot to IDE CD-ROM

Setup will do its thing.

Create partition in Unpartition space. Yes

Press Enter to install windows on this drive. Yes

Format to NTFS. Quick if you want.
It will format and begin setup.

After it copies files and reboots.

Press F2

IDE CD-ROM up to #1.

Then press ESC. Save changes and exit.

It will ask you to strike F1 to continue. Do it.

Now it will finish setup.

Make sure it boots to desktop.

Then shut down computer. And install the original hard drive (Master) you had out.

Put it on the first connection (master) on the IDE cable/bottom shelf.

And connect the one you just formatted to the middle (slave) of the IDE cable/top self.
Connect everything and start comp.

It will ask which windows installation you want to boot. It should be the first one (the one you just formatted). Take a note which one is which if not.

Now you'll be able to have 2 seperate OS's on each HD.

The reason you do this is so windows doesn't copy boot (or other windows)files to the new drive and share resources.
I had it that way at first and tried installing drivers for my soundcard on the slave and I got errors and could'nt fix it.
Fucked up Sonar playback as well. If theres a better way let me know.

GL, HF. It takes less then three hours if you know what your doing. :D

To use the new HD for space is lame.
