I'm going external, cover me.

I've had it with my stupid computer. From cool edit to audacity to cubase, I once again have an issue where my computer is acting up, resulting in me not being able to record with the ease I need. The only useful things my home computer is good for are porn and video games.

So, I'm finally going external. Brings me back to the 4-track cassette days of yesteryear. 8-track digital should do me. Last chance to stop me. Toss in any recommendations on units. I need it to be like $250-$450. Used or new, I don't care.

hey guy, I have a mr8 hd and i like it alot. The only problem i have with it is that you are forced to bounce your first four tracks before you are able to record the next four. A VF80 would be sweet.

Correct! Especially if you use it for those two side hobbies, you should have a clean computer dedicated to recording to ensure that there are no software conflicts between Cubase and your porn.

Tascam 788 can easily be found for about $300 with the CD burner. Does 8 tracks at 24 bit, and will even do 6 tracks at once. If a few tracks at once is important, then I don't think you'll find much better for that low cash. Spend a bit more (around $700 I think) and you can get the new Korg D888 which will do 8 at once, but only 16 bit.

I track on my 788 at 24 bit and import to Cubase for mixing where I can use my UAD1 card & other good plugs. Pretty reliable and decent quality sound for not a huge investment.

I'm not surprised you are having problems with your PC if you are using it to look at porn. Its probably riddled with STS's (Sexually Transmitted Spyware) :p

hahaha, that was my original thought as well.

internet porn = baaad for computer :p

...

Thanks for all the comments, tips, and such. Yeah, the porn probably wasn't the best idear in the world, but in a way I'm glad because now I can get back to worrying about just playing good "onto tape" and not how the waveforms look and how many effects I can try and add. One less computer screen to stare at too. For me, simpler is better because I go nuts with too many options. It's back to basics!

Those things are so cheap now. I remember when my buddy dropped a huge wad on 2 of 'em back in the day.

I've always felt this way about computers. Every now and again, I get a computer a bit more involved in what I'm doing, and it works great for a little while, then I start running into strange, inconsistent issues again. I still think computers are designed to do lots of things just good enough, and nothing really well. And they're just not inspiring to me.

I have an ADAT. I've heard the stories. But when I press the power button, it doesn't ask me what I want to do - it's ready to record audio.

I wish you well and hope you end up with a set up that is inspiring.

Fair play to you greendank, getta tascam 488 and 100 tdksa cassettes, you might even actually start to enjoy recordin again. In my opinion, computers are "a bit thick" when it comes to music.

honestly, maybe look into a cheap computer to JUST run your audio programs? under $500 for something halfway decent now here: www.cyberpowerpc.com ....i got a AMD 64-bit 3800+ coming this week... =), my second computer from cyberpower. - great service and support when hardware breaks. they replaced bad ram i had even 2 years after my warranty was up, tite. ha.
