I'm Coming Home (Demo)

I recorded this demo on my BR-532. It's very rough, just enough to get something for my band to hear, to learn the song.

I'm in the studio recording this now.

On the demo I was going for a "wall of guitars" sound. I just started using this recorder a few months ago and I am still getting used to it.

This place has been a great place for me to figure things out and I want to thank you all for your posts and sharing your experices. I hope to learn a lot here.

There are two songs:

1. I'm Coming Home
2. A Castle For Your Heart

One is a rocker and the other one is a folk song.
 
I listened to both, they sound pretty good. I wasn't crazy about the samples on the rock song. It sounded pretty cluttered, I hear some digital pops (or something). Lots of reverb too. The folk song sounded good, good acoustic tone.

Thanks for your comments FattMusiek.

I do tend to go overboard with the reverb. I have to spend more time on mix. These demos were rushed, and there is going to be learning curve for me as I learn to use the BR-532. I need to spend more time getting a good sound.

One more thing. Thanks for mentioning the acoustic guitar tone. I didn't go direct. I used the external mike on the BR-532 and a Shure SM58 on the guitar. Still need to work a little more on positioning the SM58 to get a fuller sound. The guitar I used was a Tokai.


Still looking to get a condensor mic. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Nice music - waaaayyyyy too much reverb.
I liked the rocker a lot - a Springsteen kind of vibe - nice singing voice - get it out from behind the verb. You said they were rough drafts so let us hear the un-verbed cuts. The tune really rocks! Good rhythm and lead work. And I'm a retired GI so I'm in touch with the thoughts. Cool, man.

The ballad - very pretty. Nice playing, nice chord changes. Soaked in verb. (Sorry - I don't mean to keep harping on it but it's really detracting form the playing and singing.) You've got some talent there - thanks for sharing!!

Download as much of the folks' stuff on this board as you can and give it some serious listening - I guarantee your production will uncrease 100% in no time. These folks wail!!

Has a "rock anthem" feel to it. Springsteen-ish sound.

Wish I could download - it's easier to critique. Some pitchinness with the vox in spots.

I thought the reverb on things was a bit too big. By that I mostly mean the decay was too long. The predelay was a bit much too. I think it was causing some sibalance to become more pronounced.

I heard some sort of clicking throughout. I think it might be clipping, but I'm not sure.

Harmonies during the chorus would be sweet. The wall of guitars sound is ok. You're getting it, but you're not there yet. The midrange in all of the layers is building up. It's a bit on the abrasive side.

Keep at it. Trip...

I'm going to give it another go and remix it with less reverb! I listened to waayyy too much Phil Spector when I was growing up. ;>)


What are good settings when using reverb? What I guess I'm asking for is how do I get a nice 'ambience' without going over board?

yeah I heard the clipping. Didn't really closing monitor my input levels on this one. And there are going to be harmonies on the chorus, I agree that it would be a nice touch. I don't want to do too much though, you know, like the reverb!! ;>)

Again, thank you all so much for giving me a hand with this. I will be reading the post like Milan said, it's really something I have to work on and think more abut how to do these recordings and mixes.

You guys are the best!!!

I'm working on a remix of the folk song. I hope to have it up by next week, since work is pressing on me this week.

I have one more question...

What type of recording gear do you guys use? I haven't been able to do EQ on each track on the BR-532, maybe there's some way to do that but I'm still reading the manual and I haven't come across that yet.

Here's what I'm thinking of doing:

1. Get the Korg 1200CD... it's got 12 tracks and you can EQ each track.

2. I just got Cool Edit PRO 2 and I read there is some way to pull the tracks out of the BR-532 and covert them to wav files and then put them into Cool Edit PRO.

So any suggestions as to how to proceed would really be appreciated. Mabye some other digital recorder is better. I'm green at this so any help will go along way. I've started reading Home Recording Magazine and it has been helpful in suggesting gear, but I'd rather hear from people who have actually used it to get their opinions. Sometimes I think these magazines just push products that they get advertising money for so I get a tiny bit suspicious.


I'm starting to download some of the music here and it is absoultly incredible. Should help me in getting better mixes.
