Hi Folks,
Actually managed to steal away from work stuff, (it's THAT time of year),& to squeeze into my little recording space today for the 1st time in more than a month.
Termite repairs are done & I'm not going to paint down there so I just rearranged the deckchairs so to speak & added a new set of vocals from Terry - recorded to 4 track tape, sent snail mail & then uploaded.
There's an added bonus of a little sax to play countermelody to the end of the guitar solo.
I've used the Motown trick on the vocals & have done a rough levels mix.
Any ideas?
When I get a decent mix done I'll A - B the previous vocal version & this for a decision as to which is preferred.
Oh, the picture accompanying the soundclick player is my wife dressed in an outfit 1st grade made for her - "Conan the Librarian".

Vocals are louder than the music...leave teh vocal level, and slowly bring up the other instruments...just enough to surround teh vocals. I think with these vocals, you might want to leave them a bit outfront, as they are sung softly. I think the performance is nice, so don't bury it. I just think the guitar ans bass could come up in volume a bit and still not bury teh vocals. Be careful with the drums.

Nice job so far man.

Yeah ,the vocals seem just a bit more up front or present while the music, and guitar specifically seem a bit more distant or back in the mix.Your guitar style/sound reminds me of early U2/Edge.
Really like the lyrics and the overall vibe of the song.

I'm voting for this version now.... I'm lovin the vocals on this one... Terry is singing with a lot of feeling and his sustain is excellent. The ending on the vocals is great - definitely like that bit of production. Your addition of vocal track was done well - tape speed can vary from one machine to another....

I love really the up-front vocals but I'd bring up the instruments a tad to balance. :D

Glad you have regained access to your studio..... :)

:D :) :D :)

Sounds good.

The drums sounds really nice.

The vocals are a bit upfront, so maybe raise the surrounding instruments a little. :)

Overall sounding really cool. :) :)

Yeah I agree with Dogman - bring the other instruments up around the vocals. Esp the drums - they're played well and they sound good, just too far in the background

Bulls Hit, thanks mate.
bigbubba, Will do!
Ido1957,There were a couple of speed probs. but I think I managed to get around them, ta.
Variaxman, edgie guitar eh. This riff was from 1989 or so so it's possible. Ta.
Dogman, as you say kind sir...
Those excellent drums are RAMI, of course.
I'll get onto the levels after Terry gets back to me on his opinions.

This sounds better.....more even. Vocals seem to sit better with the rest of the parts now. I'm going to play with it a bit in Sonar, and see if I have anything specific to offer you. Might not, as it's sounding pretty swell now. The solo was a bit loud...might knock that down a notch or so...but the basic mix is good. Song has a great vibe.

Hi,

Not any experience in this kind of this music but I'll give it a try:

-In the beginning there seem to be something dropping on the right.
I think it's some static that's suddenly gone ? (second 5 right after the last floor tom hit)
-The drums sound good , kick seems to blend nicely with the bassguitar.
Kuddos on a very good drum sound.
-You might be able to create some more room if you pan the guitar or do some stereo trick on them , I think they are fighting with the vocals a bit in the middle.
-The wah wah guitar has a bit of too much high fq (3-4k) in it and might benefit from some more body.(1k)
-End echo on the vocals is very cool :)
-Turn that sax up ! Saxes rock :D

I hope this is a bit helpfull as I have no experience in listening/recording this kind of music

Hi Folks,
Impatient fellow that I am, I've made the recommended changes prior to discussing it with Terry.
I hope it's not toooooo low in the vox now - I seem to be a little heavy handed.
Let me know please.

Good remix rayc  I'm still getting clarity on the vocals but with a bit more support from the backing tracks. The guitar doesn't seem to be competing against the vocals on my speakers - fairly good distinction between the two. I think they are both sitting centered so it might appear they are in each other's space. Keep us posted on any tweaks you make to this one.
The lyrics are very good in this song. Terry has a way of crafting his lyrics so that the points he makes are done with style and intellect, The message is subtle but unmistakeable in meaning. He is frank where others fear to tread.

Really like this one man. I've liked it for awhile now and i find it pretty cool how i get to hear it progressing along. Every time I listen to this I get that main guitar line stuck in my head for the rest of the day. Vocals are clear and sit well on my system. Still like the way the guitar solo pans, glad that stayed in tact. I'm not good at mixing advice and I've listened a few times looking for something to stick out but no luck from here. Great song man, glad you kept putting time into this one I think it's a winner.

Take care

gary

i enjoyed this like i enjoy all your stuff. i think the balance between voice and music is just perfect. great bass both the playing and sound : punchy with just the right amount of low end.

the saxophone 'round 2.40 is barely audible!!! i think it's playing something interesting contrasting or even counterpointical to the guitar but i can hardly hear it!
the solo guitar is good, interesting contrast in sound structure. but it silmply is too loud. it could do with quiet some dB less.

cool stuff

your sound has a vibe to it .. can't call it sixties or seventies or whatever but it's similar still unique.

I can't seem to open the soundclick player at work. I'll try from home...

Can't wait.

Balance sounds good. Vocal and drumset sound great. Gtr is a little hazy. What processing is it going through?

Personally I could use a tad more vox on this latest version. I am listening on phones so its hard to judge. I like vocals way up front.

The song itself is extremely cool. Thats why I need the vox absolutely clear, the words are cool and must be heard. I can hear em, but I am straining a bit. Its the guitar strumming that is competing, turn that down a bit and it will be perfect. Very cool, I always enjoy listening to your stuff.
