Hi guys!
Hope you all have had a good month or so.
Top of my list. I have been talking about some people about a concept that I call "reverse dynamics" in modern music production. It seems that it's a topic that could be discussed here and used by us more.
Here's the skinny.
With the emphasis on radio & record music being very LOUD, alot of discussion goes back and forth on the quality of the sound of the music declining. For the most part, loud squashed mixes and mastering is in, if you're not doing it...you're probably not making alot of splash in the music industry ocean.
So recordings are being made the same way that they always have, but in the end, the mixing/mastering engineers are "sucking the life" out of the mix. So maybe we should reverse engineer the process and change the way we are writing/producing the songs. By the way, this is not a new or original concept, it's been being done in LA, Nashville, NYC all the time. But I don't think many of us think about it this way.
Have you noticed that when you listen to the radio, a soloed acoustic stands out more than when the whole band comes in? We understand the compression/limiting equaling out the end product that we are hearing. So instead of using alot of tracks for emphasis, we should look at using sparse arrangements. Instead of the big power chords on 6 stacked guitars, just one..because ultimately, THAT will end up sticking out on the finished product.
It's backwards thinking that I am currently trying to apply to production and writing. Working with what is accepted and making it work for me. So I don't feel limited by it, but I use it as another tool.
I'd like to hear comments on this if you have any. And if I made no sense at all, let me know and I'll try to explain better.
