Hey guys! So I'm looking for a new ldc. All I've got right now is an MXL v67g, and while it's a good mic, I'm looking for that next level. Something between $300-$500 would be great :)

I've looked at the Studio Projects C1, Sennheiser MK4, and Avantone CV-12 so far, but I wanted to run stuff by you guys because most of you are much more knowledgeable than me in this matter :D

So, any hidden jewels that I'm missing in that price range? I'm just looking for something that can be multi-functional with many different uses and perhaps an omni mode!

You've never heard of the rode NT1000? I've never heard it (EDIT: I haven't heard the new ones just the ones from at least 5 years ago), but the name gets kicked around a lot. I used one years ago when they first came out and did not like the high end one bit. I guess this is something that's changed over the years (?) but I didn't like them when they first came out and did not find it to be a versatile mic.

A couple of options I've really liked (and used...no "heard about this mic" recommendations):

MK 319 - mine aren't moded, but that is an option. They are dark and accurate with no hyped high end. They work really well on acoustic guitars and rooms, and even on some clean to slightly OD cabs. I've never tried them as drum OH. On vocals they are hit and miss, some voices sound wonderful others don't. I've seen them anywhere from $200ish up to $350, and a couple of times a set for $550. Same mic as the MK219 just a different body...so I guess the MK219 is an option too.

AT4050 - multipattern, sounds good on everything. I've never loved it for vocals, but for drums and rooms and acoustics and cabs it's great. About $500 new. Outstanding mic and very versatile.

AKG C2000B - probably the most underrated mic I've ever used. It's a medium diaphragm to be technical, but I love it on acoustics and many many other sources. It's really nice for female vocals, and, like most, hit and miss on male vocals. For $250-300 it is a steal!

Rode NTK - a lot of people don't like this because it does have a sort hyped high end. But, I've found it to be really nice on a lot of vocals, acoustic guitars, and for rooms (just roll off some of the highs). For $500 new, I'd rather get 2xAKGs.

That's all I have experience with in your range...my recommendation is either MK319 if you can find a good deal or a used one, or 2xAKG. For $500 you'll have a really nice pair that can do a lot.

oh, and Moresound will tell you to get an EV RE-20 :) It's a dynamic that a lot of people really like, I've just never used one myself.

I bought an NT1000 back in the day and couldnt get rid of it fast enough.

The Avantone is a pretty good all-around mic. ADK Vienna, Hamburg, A6, theres a lot of ADK great sounding mics in your price range and they are a couple of steps up for you. LOVE the 4050. Hit or miss on the vocal thing with it. Perfection on most other stuff.

I have a 12year old MK319. I'll NEVER mod it or loan it out. Its that good. Musta been a Wednesday mic cause the 2 others I bought were shit. The C2000 is the ONLY C series AKG that should be allowed in a studio. OKOK...the C4000B is a surprising mic but hard to find used and way overpriced new.

Really, theres a huge gap in this price range. When you get up to the $700-$1000 then theres some really really good stuff that will last you a lifetime. Miktek, Advanced Audio, higher end ADK, Avantone tubes, AKG 414ULS, upper end Audio Technica, Blue,Shure KSM44, upper end Cascades, maybe a used Soundelux U195 (which is the BEST mic you can buy for the money, period)

If you're gonna do this for a long time, buy gear that you wont want to replace....buy gear that as your ears mature and your techniques improve, the gear doesnt restrict you.

Rode NTK - listen to my crappy vocals on Soundclick (G and M Project link in my sig). All of them use an NTK. I paid $700 Canadian from Long and McQuade about 5 years ago.
Jan @ finemastering recommended an M-Audio Sputnik as the Rode has a nice sound but doesn't mix as well.
So I bought the Sputnik - used off Ebay for $350 plus shipping (mint and about 1/2 price from street price).
Have comapared side by side and they are close with the Sputnik being a little clearer. NTK has a "beefier" tone.
Both are tube but the Sputnik has 3 polar patterns (NTK has 1) and Sputnik has bass rolloff and 10db pad.
So my money is on a used Sputnik.....

:D Jon has already listened to me and has one in his locker now! :)

It's one of those must have right next to the Shure 57 ;)

I keep wanting to buy one, but other things keep getting in the way...definitely my next mic purchase.

Haha, check em out. The Rode is very common, and I've used it loads of times. Demo both these mics if you can.

Unfortunately, due to the small college town I live in, I won't be able to demo anything (I actually never have been able to...ever!)...kinda sucks but I guess I just gotta roll with it :D It's why I rely on you guys so much!

Sounds like a great mic, thanks for the other suggestions as well! :)

Yeah, Sputnik would be pretty sweet. It's looking pretty good!

Haha well remember I actually got the re320 instead ;) But I don't think there's probably that much difference really! the 320 is superb all-around and sounds absolutely awesome on a kick. Life is good :D

Hmmmm well after doing some hardcore googling I'm starting to see tons and tons of people say that any condenser around my price range would just be a temporary fix and a waste of money in the long run. Other people have asked the same question as me, and they mostly get "Sm7b!" as their answer (even though they're looking for condensers :D)...I respect that mic too, but I think it would be overkill when combined with my nice shiny new EV re320 :)

There are many LDC out there that have the mojo. It all depends on what your looking for as a final result!

I just want a warm sound with with crisp highs that aren't harsh. :D

I feel like I'm on a dating website or something haha! "I just want a blond who's into art and long walks on the beach!"

Thanks Henry! Looks like I'm gonna start saving up hardcore now :)

If your anywhere near a GC they have them on display and possibly for tasting.
Don't be surprised by the size of it for it is tiny in comparison to other microphones.

Not always - the new Sennheiser MK4 is getting an excellent reputation and seems to punch way above its price.

Also - when you upgrade later, the MK4 won't be wasted as it's great for other things as well.

I'd leave the SE2200A on the list. I now have two and often use them in preference to some rather more expensive (AKG and Sennheiser) mics I have in my kit. Not that I've gone off the others, I just think the 2200A punches well above its weight.
