Absolutely! Most people should be more minimalist with compression than they are!

Thanks for the advice

I always laugh when you post, cause that bear avatar kinda looks like he's talking, and I always picture the bear giving me advice about normalization. its a pretty smart bear in my imagination....
 
Yes, but it's a little known fact that the bear's not actually BLUE. Bruce took a photo of an ordinary brown bear and ran it through his compressor at a very high ratio with a very fast attack and release. Now the bear's blue.

Compressing some tracks (often vocals) can help these tracks to 'sit' better in the mix : you don't want the lead vocals to jump out a you in parts and be really quiet in others.
This has to be done prior to "mastering".

Of course if you did a really good job tracking, and depending on the singers 'mic technique', you might not need any compression...
