I'm a rap artist about to start a new album. What mic do I use?

If you are asking this question you won't understand the answer. Go to a good studio. Let them pick out a mic. If it doesn't sound the way you want, complain/go to another studio/take up doing voices for cartoons. Repeat as necessary.

If you are trying to out-engineer the engineer, there's more of a problem here than which mic you need.

I could pay 40/hr to record with the knock-off tlm103 with my engineer, or I can go to this other guy and record with his 149 and take those vocal recordings back to the same engineer as before to mix.

Not sure what you mean by "the knock-off tlm103", but I can tell you that both the U87 (you were also considering) and the real TLM 103 share the same capsule and have a similiar frequency response, resulting in a slight bump near the 5k range (a little more with the 103 making it slightly brighter, and the U87 correspondingly darker).

IMO, if you don't sound good through a TLM 103, there's a good chance you won't sound much better through a U87. The older U87s are also somewhat different than the newer versions, though they still exhibit a darker sonic quality. Since there are a lot of excellent tools to work with, I wouldn't get too caught up with a particular mic or model.

Did anyone else stop and think about the $40 per hour rate in L.A.???? Thats damn cheap.

$40 an hour is cheap ANYWHERE.

Local Studio time is averaging $60 an hour unless you buy a weeks worth of time.

One question...
How can you use the word 'rap' and 'artist' in the same sentence without crackin' up? Hate to break it to you Doctor Seuss, but there's no talent required to rhyme at a 3rd-grade level, especially when destroying the English language in the process.

I don't likes no green eggs and ham...
I don't likes dem Sam I is...yo.

Hey, giant turd. You are the most ignorant prick i've ever seen. If you don't like a genre of music, keep it to your self. There are plenty of intellectual rappers out there. You can't base everything concerning rap on rappers that can't rap. There's atleast one artist in every music genre that sucks at that genre. Take a hike and stick your head up your usb port(universal serial butt).

Another rap mic threat? Hey guys, go for the Shure SM57 or Shure SM58. Best value for money.

Seriously, i've thought about gettin a sm58 just to mess with. I've used an sm58 on a pa system but i've never recorded with one. I've heard that they really shine when teamed with the right pre. One day when i'm able to get a pro preamp like the big boys, i'm going to get me an sm58 and try it out!

Despite what people may think, SM58's are good for recording a mans voice - and that is coming from somebody who tends to hate Shure mic's. They just don't "look" like a studio mic, so that's one reason why a lot of people don't use them.

I'm thinkin about askin my pastor if i can borrow one to mess with. I'm the musician/assistant sound guy so he'll probably let me hold it. I bought a supposed sm58 knockoff bout 2 years ago and i hated how it sounded when i recorded. It's a stageworks um-88. Maybe it's just my behr(you know the rest) preamp that makes it sound so bad.

That's what i thought but i heard that it sounds really good through really good preamps, which most mics will.

hey tone every body has an opinion and every body here has a right to thier opinion. and to exercise thier opinion .this site is mostly one mans opinion
some art, alot of science.america was formed to be a free country.freedom of
speach.thats why all those comunist bastards and lazy fucks from different countrys come to are country.because we have certain freedoms and we can
give our opinons with out problems. so chill man last time I checked thier are not
to many rappers up for nobel peace prize. they carry a stereo type of mean dicks with attitudes and drug problems.shallow people man.cant wait for rap
to turn into disco

Exactly. Freedom of speech. That's why i said what i said because i have the freedom to do so. I just stated my opinion about the turd's opinion. He can say whatever he wants to say and i can't make him stop. I can tell him to tho :D ! Don't think i'm getting back at you or anything. I respect your opinion. Nothin but love man!

So do you guys think a 149 will sound good on my voice? Oh wait, none of you have recorded me so there's no way for any of you to possibly know. See why that question is stupid? Whoever said that this thread was started just to increase play count was dead on.

See why that question is stupid?

Yes, we do. If someone walks into my studio and wants to know what brand of mics I use, my immediate response is to count the silverware.

If you want to tell me what kind of mic to use, instead of going by my years of experience, in my room, then the charge will NOT be $40 an hour.

Try $500.

That statement was very offensive to me.
So sorry.P.M. me your mailing address and I will send you a $grand to
help out with any therapy you may need.
You are not seeing what is really happening here. The original posters
question was nothing but a ruse to get people to click his link.If he
really wanted advice,he would have taken it,instead of taking a shit
on it.
BTW,my dislike of rap has nothing to do with lyrical content. It has to
do with lack of musical content and group dynamics.

It has to do with lack of musical content and group dynamics.

Listen to Soulquarians, A Tribe Called Quest, The Roots, or my personal favorite J. Dilla.
