I recently bought a Mackie Onyx 1220. it didnt come with the firewire interface.
I have been trying to record onto my CPU, using Acid Pro, but when i hit record all the sound comes out mushy and unbalanced. sounds almost like im picking up sound from the hard drive. i need to know if i should spend the extra couple hundred bucks and buy the option card...or should i just buy a multi-track recorder and export to the CPU. i would almost rather get the firewire interface. but i dont know if the sound will come into the computer with power or am i still gonna have to master it.

Am I missing something? I took a quick look and it looks like this is a firewire interface.

How are you recording from it?

i have to buy the firewire it was an option for my mixer. right now im just running RCA cable through the tape outs into the mic input on my laptop. thats how im recording using acid pro.
but sound isnt coming in good. i need to know if i spend the extra $300 and get the firewire interface that the sound going into the CPU is gonna be powered or weak

It will be like night and day. Not sure what you mean by powered but it will be what you want.

what i mean by powered is as of now running the RCA cables from the tape out to the MIC input on my laptop is giving me a very low quality, fuzzy, quiet, and a lot of noise and swooshing sounds. will the firewire help

ok. i have been looking at getting a sound card such as M-Audio Mobile Pre. its a little bit cheaper. but can i run 4 tracks (2 acoustics, bass and vocals) and route it to the M-Audio Mobile Pre then my laptop. cuz i dont have a firewire port or a place to put one on my laptop.

Well no firewire port really puts a crimp on that. The thing is you don't really need a mixer and an interface. just an interface would work fine, maybe even better. I think the less gear you're running through before you record the better off you are. The M-Audio unit you're talking about will only do two at a time. There are tons of options though, but you may have to up the budget.
