Been trying to save what little money I have for things like acoustic treatment etc. But I found an 80s porta two that needs to be repaired for sale. I bought it as a side project to fix up and mabye keep or resale. Apparently it's stuck in playing position. Has anyone had the same problem or can anyone advise me on where to start?

By the way I'd like to make it known I blame you dave for getting me addicted to portastudios!! :eek::D
 
Yeah, they're cool!

This problem is usually a belt. It usually get down to that, but this unit is mechanically complex so watch all the little parts.:eek:;)
 
Yep, sounds like it could be a control belt -- the belt that pulls the head forward into the tape. If the belt breaks or slips off in the play position it will stay there until the belt is replaced. Could also be the play button not releasing I suppose. I'm not familiar with the Porta Two, but these are issues common to cassette in general. I've owned the 144, 244 and 246, which will have the same problem if the control belt breaks.

Thanks for the info, the belts seem relatively easy to find so would be good if that is the problem. It'll be good for my confidence if I could fix it up, when I bought the R8 it became pretty obvious that any minor repair or calibration would have to be carried out by me or I'd have to pay a lot to someone else to do it. So I'm going to start fixing up some portas before I think about servicing anything else. Dave did you ever get round to fixing your portas?

No kidding! I blame Dave for my Tascam 244, 246, 388, 34, A-3440, 48, M-30 and a few other goodies!:D:D:p:p

Wait, this is sounding too familiar. Is there a portastudio-compulsive disorder forum we can join? Perhaps Dave has been a long term sufferer? ;) I'll help you Mr David, just send ALL your portastudios to me I'll look after them!! :eek: cured. :D

By the way dave, for the first time today I was able to try out some brand new tape on the R8 :eek: wow, can't thank you enough for suggesting the fostex. It sounds incredible!! My first reel to reel, it may be a relatively cheap & nasty in comparison to teac & tascam machines but :rolleyes: never parting with it :cool:
