Im 14 Years Old And Need Advice!

Is taping music from the radio stealing? Is making a video of something on TV and then lending it to your friend stealing? What about lending your friend a CD to copy?

Did you really pay for every MP3, plug-in, MPEG or piece of equipment?

I borrowed a keyboard and a copy of some plug ins from a friend of mine. Does that make me a criminal? No. Do I spit in the streets? Nope. Am I racist or homophobic? No way? Have I ever broken the speed limit? Niner. Do I drink and drive? Never. Am I a war supporter? Noooooo. Do I think 14 year old kids from Hong Kong should be treated like shit? No fucking way man.

I don't know if any of you have been to the far east but Piracy is completely every day stuff over there. They have people selling copied CDs, videos or software to scrape together a living on the street corners.

When you talk to people from other parts of the world you have to recognise the culture and values that they have known all their lives. You may hate Piracy but TMA may hate drugs, or supporting war or gambling or pornography or fundamentalist christianity or whatever vices you or I may have that we consider completely "normal".

None of use are saints, we all started once with some illegal copy,
No we didn't.

Funny how people expect from other people what they know can be expected of themselves.

I used to work for a shady Greek restaurant owner who was convinced that his staff was stealing from the walk-in freezer simply because they had opportunity.
(they weren't, It was my job to be sure and I did my job well.)

sorry, let's narrow it down to 'some of us'...

Something TMA has completely failed to do.

Don't get annoyed, TMA, it's just the truth.

And what about forum etiquette, which is pretty plainly spelled out, and you are told about if you overstep, and is culturally neutral, since anyone can read the rules before they jump in?

He posted saying he had pirated cubase. He got dissed. He started a new thread in another section saying he bought his copy- So don't trot out the culture thing, he knew the deal. He got outed. He started yet another thread, in yet another section, and got some help. And got dissed.
Some people were rough on him, some helped, some pointed out forum rules- nothing about pirating, just helpful advice.

He has been completely unapologetic about his behavior-piracy aside. His attitude has been fuck you, I do what I want. Cross posting, wasting people's time with repeat threads, posting in inappropriate places. Even after being (gently) told it's not cool.

That's not a cultural difference- that's just arrogant.

For personal use, no - and royalties are paid based on airplay.....

No - again personal use... and the station has paid royalties......

Definitely illegal - it's not personal use -- same as pirating...

As a matter of fact I have, asshole....... it isn't any less wrong stealing s/w than it is to walk into a pro audio store and grab an Avalon off the shelf and put it in my jacket.............

I'd think about re-adjusting my value system if I were you..........

So you've never taped a friend's album or borrowed any software in your life?

I find that extremely hard to believe.

I don't think my value system needs adjusting. I haven't resorted to swearing at anyone or offensive racial stereotypes. What I am saying is that we've all done things wrong in our lives at different times and that the people with this holier than thou attitude may have broken various legal or moral codes at some point in their lives, most likely a little copywright theft. I know I've broken laws by taping CDs or borrowing software - all be it on a short term basis until I've decided whether I want to buy it or not.

You find software sharing offensive but I find jumping on 14 year old newbie kids offensive. That's all. I'm not advocating theft, I'm just trying to promote tolerance. Does our Hong Kong-belonger friend need scorn or educating? :)

As a software developer, I see little difference between stealing my work (code) and stealing a microphone from me when you come to record....

(But it's not as bad as hitting on my wife.... or taking beers out of my fridge... ) :)

But how would you feel if you lent me your code and everyone here got angry with me?

He'd probably only get angry if you lent it to other people without asking........

But how would you feel if you lent me your code and everyone here got angry with me?

If I "lent" you my code w/o my knowledge, that's stealing.... stop trying to justify it...

How about if I come over to your parents' house, and "Borrow" your bicycle when you're not home.... Are you okay with that??? Stop trying to justify it.... (again)

Did you ever stop to think about the REASON why (almost) everyone here is angry about theft??

Jeeesh, this is getting old.... (But it's surprising for me to see how moral I am!!! ;) )

He needs educating.... and so do you - apparently........

Blue Bear Sound -- Recording Articles

"Guys, guys..... I put my pants on one leg at a time....
....except once my pants are on, I make hit records!"

I actually thought the quote was "....except once my pants are on, I make gold records!"

Just thought you'd want to be accurate... Great clip though.... Christopher Walken is great.... (and a helluva dancer too!!!)

BB- We've never "interacted" but thanks for all your informative posts... I appreciate you taking time out and sharing...

Like I said a few posts ago, I'm not advocating theft. I'm just saying that there are grey areas in every matter.

Maybe I'm trying to be too "right on" for you guys so I'll respectfully shut the hell up.

I think you're right... I typed it from memory, so I was probably off... consider it changed! ;)

And yeah - that "cowbell" skit is totally hilarious!! "It's funny 'cos it's almost true!!!"

Hey Moon, thanks for those links.

Is there any links or can you explain all this vst stuff and if any of this freeware is any good, how it compares to n-track, maybe or the other ones? I'm wondering the history of this vst plugin stuff, when it all started and all. How it works, etc.

What's the deal with so much freeware anyway? And how many different free and pay multitrack recording programs are there? And how useful or how dependable is it? More VST's take more resources, slow pc down? Send me somewhere. In the meantime I guess it's over to Google/yahoo etc. TIA - j.

Plugged,

I think that the vst plugins were first developed by steinberg for Cubase to run plugins within audio projects. I think you could build vst plugin "servers" to run the plugins and connect to them via ethernet (or some network connection) to offload the cpu hit on the local computer running Cubase. (Please somebody correct me if I'm wrong about this! ...I'm a Sonar guy, so I don't know all the history, etc., of the vst standard!!)

I myself don't know much about the vst plugs, except that they work just like the DX plugins in Sonar. Basically, they are effects (i.e. delays, reverbs, EQ's and such) that can be "plugged in" to tracks within an audio recording program such as Sonar and/or cubase. I would suggest you search the forums here and elsewhere on the net to find info on vst plugins, I'm sure there's tons of it out there.

I have not used n-tracks, so I cannot comment about it or compare programs to it, sorry. Again, search the forums and/or net as I'm sure someone has posted some good info to answer your questions.

Personally, I have worked with Audacity and have found it to be a very functional audio editor, especially for the price! I have worked a bit with Kristal, and have found it to work well, although it has it's own proprietary file format that does not appear to be compatable with any other multitrack audio recording software. Much of this software comes from the whole "open source" movement usually associated with Linux and it's associated software programs.

Here's a great site for PC-based freeware:
http://www.snapfiles.com/freeware/freeware.html

Sorry I can't be of more help. I suggest you try it out and see what you think. I mean heck, they're free! What do you have to loose? I have not experienced any "bad" results from installing these packages (Audacity and Kristal) on systems, no spyware from what I can tell...

Hope this helps!

Protein, sorry man, but your line of reasoning is pretty weak. Shure it's nice to play Robin Hood, but you cannot win this with arguments, since pirating is a crime, and that is not negotiable. If you think the kid still deserves help, go ahead. others did.

G

Pirating software will hurt you in the long run. Dont complain about not having enough money. I am only 15 and only have 1000 dollars to spend... 200 of which is budgeted for sonar 3. I am not the perfect specimen as i have pirated music but a song is not a 500 dollar program either.

Ok, I am also a 14 year old. I will start off by telling you that you don't need to spend all this money on equipment when you aren't even sure how long you are going to stay with this band you are in. I have been in three previous bands and this is the only one that really works out. The best thing to do is download N Track Studio and record from there. You just need a couple recordings that are good enough to line up a show or two while you are saving up your money. After you know that you want to get serious about it then go buy $1000 dollar software. I will tell you what I am recording with:

Sound Card/ Software:
Creative Soundblaster CT4760
Creative Soundblaster Live! Drive
80gb Hard drive
750 Mhz
512 mb RAM
N Track Studio

Instruments:
1978?:Rogers XP-8 (run down, good sound)
1997 Fender Mexican Strat
2001 Danelectro
2004 Yamaha Motif ES8 (belongs to friend recording with me)
2001 Ibanez bass (not sure about the model)
199? Lotus L-90CE (great acoustic for the price)
I wont get into the amps or mics but they aren't anything fancy.

So if you notice it doesn't take much to get a decent recording. Come on, we are 14, how much do you expect? If you want I can send you a demo song to show you how much you can do for a reasonable price (minus the Motif ES8). Just my 2 cents. Hope this helps, Derek
