HI guys

im frm HK (hong kong), its currently around 1 AM here. YAH, ive spent the whole night researching my ass off.

OK, first of all, i have a budget of around 8000 HKD, which is around 1000 US; and me and my friends want to record our first demo at HOME.

I actually have a copy of a pirated Cubase SX with me that works perfectly, so i guess that solves the problem of buying a digital recording program.

I am going to use a laptop to do my recording because the drumset is no where near my comp. Dont worry about how good my laptop is, its got 3Ghz, 1024MB ram, and 7200rpm hrd drive. However, one thing i need to know is that would i need to buy a new sound card, if so, why, and which one?

I will be needing 4 mic inputs (those things with 3 legs) so im wondering if theres anything i could just plug into my computer that has 4 mic inputs and guitar plugs OR do i have to buy a mixer?

So basically, i need to know what i need to buy that could provide:

- good sound quality recording
- 4 mic inputs
- guitar plugs

btw, does Cubase SX support all mixers or only MACKIE and cubase products?

TERR

thx this is a lot of help

HI

i'm a noob too.... and i need the same answers as him! someone help!

Running a PIRATED version of Cubase SX DOES NOT solve any problems, in fact, it creates more.
Pirates are thieves.
You'll get no help here.

Not so fast!! TMA will get some help from me in the form of a suggestion:

GO BUY THE SOFTWARE!!! :p

...Or, go download a few freeware appz & plugz (note the "warez-speak" :D )that will do the job for you and stop playing pirate!!
1. Kristal Multitrack recorder:
http://www.kreatives.org/kristal/index.php
2. Audacity Audio Editor (to edit audio within Kristal):
http://audacity.sourceforge.net/
3. Free VST plugz:
http://www.digitalfishphones.com/main.php?item=2&subItem=1
http://userpage.fu-berlin.de/~thman/VST/vst-allinstr.htm

And yeah, this smells like a troll post (my appologies if it is not ;)), but this is a great opportunity for me to post info about these very functional audio apps that are great for starters!

Good luck!!

My advice?

Don't start your music career off as a thief.

Spend some money on a legitimate copy of sequencing software, come back when you have it and we'll help you.

Good luck.

If you're really only 14 (hey, it's the Internet, who knows?), then I am willing to cut you some slack, but that doesn't mean I'm willing to help you until you do the right thing.

There are a number of very good, powerful and stable programs out there that don't cost very much. Look at N Tracks Studio. Mr. Moon had a couple of good suggestions and those are FREE!

You're not going to get any help from people who have invested thousands of hard-earned dollars in software because we understand that companies cannot afford to continue to produce these wondrous applications for us if we all decide that it's ok to simply steal them because we don't currently have the money.

Think of it this way- Imagine if your father was Steinberg and he came home and told you he couldn't buy food this month because there was no money since everyone has decided to hack Cubase now and send in the money later. You can wait a few months to eat, can't you?

Ease off a little. He's still learning.

You are probably right. I mean we can't really expect a 14 year old to know the difference between right and wrong, should we ?

I always feel guilty after I call someone a dumbass for stealing. It's probably my fault anyway..... I mean that's what my step daughter keeps telling me.

(I'm just playing with ya :D )

Here is some advice from a 48 year old to a 14 year old.

Don't stay up so late, you need your sleep.

Don't use bad language. Good language works just as well in getting your point across and will make you appear well-educated, even if you aren't.

Don't steal. In a few short years, you will be an adult. Stealing then will land you in jail. That's no way to make your mother proud.

You say you have 1000USD. That's enough money to buy Cubase.
Start there.

hi i also want to record, and steer this forum away from the piracy debate

i'm 16, from ontario, canada, and i currently just use a BR 864, and an audio capture device to capture the output onto my computer, in MP3.

now i've got to know the BR864, i think it's time to upgrade to something more complex, like cubase.

Firstly, for my level, what cubase do i need? and are there any better than cubase? maybe more user friendly programs?

also i need to know exactly how to set this all up. do i need a soundcard? how do i connect a mixer to the soundcard? and what mixer do i need?

thanks for any help that comes along

Hey there, try posting this in the cubase section. Lots of good help there.

Have fun.

.....talk about getting a scarlett letter.....I guess I'll follow suit and say stealing is bad....but then again...he is from hong kong...i think the copywrite laws are a little more lax there. and besides whos gonna arrest him? he could break out the dreaded white tiger kung fu and tear people up!

yeah i know stereotyping is bad.

if your thinking of a mixer thats not connected to the computer through usb, firewire or midi then any non-powered mixer can work with the sound card and software.

ok thats all i have to say. but before i go....I'd like to give a shout out to seagrams gin. cause i drink it and their paying me for it. lol
