i used Sonar 3 Producer's Edition and v2 before that for a couple of years and I thought i really liked it. i'd get into some pro-tools here and there at some serious studios and it always seemed like a bit of a hassle to me...i tried cubase and nuendo and they were just not what i was looking for...

but recently, after moving and selling off my stuff, i built a new studio and decided to go the pro-tools way and wow.

i love pro-tools. it's just easy when you get the hang...and powerful. my workflow has never been smoother and i find myself without limits in recording, routing, bussing, etc....

does anyone else just love pro-tools for sweet girl it really is? not just the name?

I've spent time with Pro Tools, MOTU DP3, MOTU AudioDesk, Bias Peak (maybe shouldn't go in this list?), and Sonar 3/4 PE.

I'll admit I haven't seen ProTools 7, but I still here it's bad for MIDI. Even though I haven't tried anything from Steinberg yet, or Logic, if I was building a new system today, I'd probably get a mac and DP5. I'm a big MOTU fan.

Things I don't like about Digidesign: MIDI not great. Proprietariness. Digitranslator sold seperately.

Things I don't like about Sonar: MP3 encoder sold separetly, not that I've needed to use it, but come on. Doesn't seem as inherently clean/easy as PT. Not cross platform.

Or I'd go a completely different route and just get the Tascam X-48.

Very cool, glad you're happy with your choice no matter what it was. I love my pro tools rig, its ran great from day 1, and I'm sure many other people have used other programs that work just as good. It's like shoes, some people are really comfortable with Reebok's while other dig Nike's.

yea...why the hell would you sell an mp3 encoder by itself? like there aren't a million shitty free ones out there...

maybe they're subliminally trying to keep you from compressing your mixes

It's probably just because they want you to encode them as WMAs.
Like I said, I've never needed an MP3 encoder, but I think it's silly they don't include it.

you have to understand the original MP3 codec, by Fraunhofer Society, actually has to be licensed by companies to use it. It's a patent of this company and every program out there that uses it has to pay a small fee to Faunhofer Society in order for you to encode/decode the MP3. Some companies I guess opt not to include this for free (or included in the price) with their prodcuts, so you have to purchase the license separately. Digidesign doesn't include it either, but it's only 20 bucks. I guess if they included it, they'd just tack on 20 bucks to their product price.

Not sure if the Faunhfoer is more reliable or has a better algorithm than other ones you can download...but it's still considered the staple for MP3.

Same thing with Dolby codecs. Apple includes APAK with DVD Studio Pro, but Steinberg's optional Dolby Digital or DTS encoder is $999, all because of Dolby liscensing rights. At least Steinberg offers one that is "made" with their software. With Sonar, you're on your own finding a discrete surround encoder. Surcode is the one I've come across the most.
