fuckers.....wheres my "this is awful"....damnit.:D ;)

Oh man. haha...Yea I was just kidding about that, Damn internet text. :) He didn't email me anything at all. I was just having some spam fun. He's probably a really nice guy who realizes that HomeRecers are where it's at. Sorry if I pushed the wrong buttons on anyone. :)

Oh but damn, thanks for coming to my defense anyway fellas! LOL. Cheered me up nicely. OK, sorry again...back to your regularly scheduled spam bash.

(I promise I'll figure out a way to transmit my humor over the internet without causing confusion or war. There's got to be a way...)

Well there went everybodys chance at becoming big stars!

NOT!:D

haha...exactly. And I was just trying to have a little fun playing off Khompy's quote. Guess I didn't make it obvious enough!

Hey I already had the boots on ready to go kick some ass...don't cry "wolf" to many times eh?;) :D

internet talk radio today.. KROQ tomorrow...

I think Tom is right. This forum is where it's at, everyone keeps pushing the envolope and in my naive daydreaming world this place is a fertile "cyber-Seattle". Honestly when i listen to the top echelon stuff of the clinic it really holds it's own against modern radio and rules an indie release caliber station playlist. I will bet there's more people to who will start poking around. Anyway, even being heard by one person makes it worthwhile for me.

p.s. Dave said it was actually being moved an hour earlier to 10-11PST if anyone is interested.

this whole spam, not spam.... is complete bullshit.

why don't you guys go tell Harvey Gerst to quit selling his headphones in the mic forum... or at least to put it in the "free ads" forum?

Isn't that spam (with good intent...he wants to do all us poor mutha fuckers a favor and sell us cheap headphones so we don't have to break open our piggy banks)?

the "original" ..."gimme a break"

Mix - it's a legitimate difference of opinion. It's okay to think that it's okay to advertise here if it benefits people on the board. It's also okay to think that it's spam. The only problem is when it sparks a flame war, which is what is starting here in this thread. It's no problem for the 'helper/spammer' - it's all publicity, right? The only ones who lose out are the ones who get pissed at each other. So I'm arguing for a bit of tolerance - neither side's right, actually.

But here's a question I'd like answered: both Crawdad and myself have in the past politely inquired if it's okay to advertise our albums in this forum, and people have politely let us know that we shouldn't do that. So Crawdad and I have declined to advertise our stuff here. So how come this new guy gets to advertise what he's flogging here? (LOL - or are you one of the ones who think it's okay if I advertise my stuff here?)

Why I'm here

I came here to learn to mix music to the MP3 format. I agree with Groucho, we must protect the inegrity of the board.

Music and art are inexact enough for us to spend precious moments trying to decide if the poster is focused enough in the area of 'direct response' ... to a 'listening'.

This post by this person is way, way off base for this forum.

Isn't there a 'marketing your music' forum?
That's where it ought to be.

Well put, dobro. We should be able to discuss this without becoming a bunch of screeching children. "This is bullshit!!! I want my mommy!!!" (etc.)

I don't know who this Harvey guy is, since I don't frequent other areas of this site. But I don't think this is really such a complicated issue. Obviously, if dobro, or any other regular has a record coming out, we're gonna want to know about it (*I* will, anyway).

But comparing dobro (or crawdad, or whoever) announcing the fact that they have a record out to some *First Time Poster* saying "send me your music" is kind of silly.

I mean, come on guys. If you've been around here awhile, I don't think anyone cares if you occasionally say "I'm having a gig here, come say hi" or "I finally cobbled together a record - check it out here".

I agree that Dave's message was on the borderline. But since none of us have ever heard from him, except for this one advertisment/solicitation, I'd say it qualifies as spam.

I don't mean any personal offence to Dave and whatever his thing is over there at worldradio.com or whatever it was. But imagine this BBS is a conversation, and someone just walked up and said "Hi, I'm Dave. Give me your music, and I'll play it on my radio station." It might not be evil or anything, but it's not really what the conversation was about, and we'd be right to politely ask him to get a clue.

"This post by this person is way, way off base for this forum."

I don't know if it's way off base, but I want people to think about it and talk about it. If Dave's program is legit, then it's a wonderful opportunity, right? But does that mean he should advertise in this forum? And if not, where should he advertise? Cuz the forum dedicated to advertising and selling stuff is a loser forum - very few people ever go there, right?

It's a problem we've never solved. And probably never will, given the continued magnificent absence of Dragon. Hence my appeal for tolerance of each other's views.

In the end, here's what I want: an mp3 clinic devoted to presenting our music to each other, that and nothing else, nothing more. I also want to hear about useful opportunities like Dave's program (if a useful opportunity is what it turns out to be). So how do we rig that?

I would respectfully suggest that what you want is impossible. It would require an active moderator, and we don't have one here. Otherwise, if you open the door to "useful opportunities" you let in everything... spam city. Unless there's someone to sort through the endless crap and allow through the few things that may be worth reading, you're headed down a dark road.

I recently firewalled myself for the first time because of a combination of spam, hackers, and viruses, so this is an issue near to me right now. I think spam is the #1 scourge of the internet and I don't want to do anything to encourage it. If that means missing a few interesting opportunities here and there, so be it. I would even go so far as to suggest that in most cases, any "useful opportunity" that is advertised generally on a BBS is neither useful, nor an actual opportunity for much of anything.

Man, tough crowd here.

Craig Anderton of musicplayer.com was on my show. He sent me some of his music - and I played it. Bryan Carlstrom, engineer/ producer for The Offspring, Alice In Chains, Social D and many others was on the show (a very gracious gesture on his part, since he was coming off of a late night session) and sent me some test mixes of his latest project...and I played one. John Nady (Nady Systems), Aspen Pitman (Groove Tubes), Douglas Fearn (D.W. Fearn)...these guys and others are top-flight industry pros who I have been fortunate to have interviewed.

A listener told me about this forum and suggested I post here since the level of musicianship, production quality and songwriting here are remarkable given that these are home recordings we are talking about. I myself have never visited this board before and again I apologize for the consternation my post here has stirred up.

My new offer? Don't send me your music and I won't play it. I promise.

just tell me your gonna play MY song ....and screw all this other nonsense....!!!:D

Dave, speaking for myself, at this point this ain't particularly about you personally, or your credentials, or who you know, or who you blew, etc. Your post just opened up a discussion about how we are to deal with unsolicited solicitations/promotions.

I'm sure you're really a big shot. Really. I'm super impressed with name-dropping.

Really.

Chris
(no, really...)

If this message had not been posted in the clinic, a lot of people who only visit the clinic would've missed it. Since the people in here are the ones that he is trying to offer this opportunity to, it seems like it would've been pointless to stick it somewhere else.

Seeing as how he has never posted here before (how many of us accidently posted something in the wrong place when we were new?), and it seems like he is just trying to help, I don't see a problem with it.

All IMO of course.
