This is one of my more ambitious covers...it is a song by Genesis called "I Know What I Like"...from there "Selling England By The Pound" album...back when Peter Gabriel was the lead singer. It was pretty tuff as I have no keyboards/synths which are a big part of there sound.I used the sitar model on my variax for alot of this.Vocals are rough...this is my 1st mixdown and would love some feedback on how its sounding....
Thanks!!! :)

I don't know the original...but that's a pretty good sounding start....very clear. Vocals might be a bit buried. Pretty good mix, otherwise. The sounds are very good. Vocals seem a bit distant, or have too much room to them. Make them a bit more in the mix, and it should sound very much like music of that era.

Thanks for the feedback Dogman...yeah there is alot going on in this one....I have some verb on the vocals that may be a bit too much....will address that on the next mix....thanks for listening!

Never head the original. But this sounds cool.

I agree that the vox sound very distant. What's that tabla sound in there? Is that drums....

Has a SnakeDog5050 feel to it also. :)

Low end could stand some boosting if you'd want ever want to boost it.

Lyrics would be nice to understand....

Cool. :)

yeah cool axeman! Definitely an ambitous song to try and cover. I like how the sitar is more present in the mix, gives it sort of a different feel than the original. Especially during the chorus, since there's lots of sitar and no synth, gives it your own twist. Nice outro too, cool feel and tone on guitar. Yeah the mix sounds pretty good, just fix up the vox some and cool. Sounds like there's too much verb and low volume on the verses... the verb kinda fits the chorus though. So maybe keep it for chorus, reduce it during verse. Sounding good

I think for this era song, you can keep some verb, but maybe shorten up the time on it.

I like the vocal level. Nuggets to be unearthed Gabriel didn't want to be understood.
The bass works sometimes but not others. They had a rickenbacker very scooped sound on bass didn't they? It's right on in the spoken bits & various other spots but when in the other parts it gets a bit buried & muddy.
Apart from that little crit I think this is a top hommage to prefluff'n'popnonsense Genesis.
Nice work.

bigbubba - Hey Bigbubba...thanks for posting...yup,thats tabla loops as well as drums...I thought it might fill out the sound a bit, and sound kinda "cosmic"....I am disappointed about the overall lowend in this mix and will be addressing on the remix..I really wanted a stronger kick sound.Vocals will be fixed as well.

SnakeDog5050 - Thanks Snake!Yeah I tried to kinda change it up a bit and feature the Sitar a bit more than the original...The Gabriel years of Genesis are probably my alltime favorite band, so it was fun to try and cover one of there songs...gonna kick up the vox level and dry out the verb a bit on the lead vocals as you suggest...will post a remix soon.

Dogman - Yeah, I agree about the need for some verb...I originally had it very dry....and it was like a cringe fest to listen to those vocals.. :p

rayc Yeah Gabriel wrote some pretty surrealistic vocals back then didnt he?It's definitely a long ways from the Phil Collins era Abacab , Invisible Touch type stuff.(although some of that stuff is pretty cool as well)
I really want to get that Rik sound for the bass and did quite a bit of EQ'ng, know any magic frequencies to get that sound? :) ....I was also kinda searching for what to play on the Bass during the chorus, and am not to sure I like what I have there now...will probably lay down a new Bass track to kinda get the song to swing a bit better..
Thanks for posting and the good word!

Hey variaxman - Not familair with the original but it definitely has that vibe from the psychadelic 60's/70's. Very airy with heavy scoops of reverb....I'm a verb junkie so I like the treatment on this mix. I actually found a spot where it seemed dry on the vocals ( at 1:12). Listening on headphones and not getting much low bass, although the definition is nice - maybe a tad more lows would be nice. Cool sitar and percussion. Lots of layers going on giving this a big fat sound...playing and singing is cool as always....
Neat picture of the lawnmower man beside the tune.....

:D :) :D :)

Thanks!!Yeah I just gotta tweak the verb a bit and get everything in the same place I think....gonna hit the low end as well and bring it up in the next mix. Thanks for the feedback and the good word...appreciate it!

Very nice. I am very familiar with the song. Indeed its a very big undertaking and you did a terrific job.

My suggestion would be to put this tune in the 21st century. It's too emulative, it might work better abstract. The vox of the original are often buried, and so are these at times. I would rather hear an interpretation than a redo.

Kudos for a job well done, this must have taken considerable time. Next time I wanna hear some Foxtrot.

Hi Axeman, I listen to the tune a few days ago.

I love the intro, and the verses.
But there`s something happening in the chorus that kinda makes the tune drop.
It might be that missing organ  , I`m not sure.
The chorus in the origian is quite powerfull, no powerchords, but you have that bombastic bass, and the strong organ chords underlaying the vox\synth melody line.

All in all I think its a great job mate, its probbably just some small changes in the mix that is needed.

Dumde-dum... ;)

Ps I fully concour With DavidK Lets get some watcher of the skies in here :D

DavidK - Thanks for posting...man, I was really sweating trying to get this one to at least sound recognisable to those listeners that have heard the original...not having keyboards available made this difficult as they are such a prominent part of the bands sound, so I'm humbly surprised when people mentioned it sounds like the original vocally...I agree with you that its much funner and also more interesting to do an interpretation, rather than a carbon copy.I'm not done with this one yet so hopefully I will be able to add more of my own twist to what I've done so far.
Foxtrot eh....man, I would looove to try and tackle "Watcher Of The Skies"!! one of my all time favs...it's just those damn keyboards ;) !!
Thanks again...appreciate the feedback!

Track Rat - "Get 'Em Out By Friday"...another classic!! Seems there are a few of us fans of the Gabriel era Genesis...cool! I was thinking maybe "The Return Of The Giant Hogweed"...kinda more guitar driven...especially Hacketts tapping intro!

Nakatira - Hey buddy ..whats up? Man...I hear you on the keyboards...I've been trying all kinds of stuff with loops/samples...that's how I made the long droning "A" sound for the intro and verse....I just can't get it to sound right by chopping up the drone and changing the pitch to match the chorus...I was thinking of trying this Fruity Loops program and see if I could sequence the proper melody/chord changes for the chorus...or I may just have to sneak a keyboard/synth by the wife...been wanting one for a long time...I also miss Gabriels flute parts...
Thanks a lot for the kind words..I really appreciate it!
