...would you ask the horns (trumpet and sax) to share a ribbon mic? I ask, because I've got to record this band called the Hornettes this weekend in Toronto and I'm just toying with ideas on how to mic them up. Most of the mics will double as reinforcement, with a few spot mics specifically for the recording (drum OH and one or two to capture the crowd).

So basically, I'm asking whether or not any of you would consider using a ribbon in this situation for both horns to blow into and whether or not you'd use this mic as a house mic as well. There's certainly no lack of mics or anything, I'm just trying to keep phasing in mind. We've got about 15 SM57s, several Sennheiser 935s, a Beta 58, a couple ribbons, an MD421, two Rode M3s, a few LDCs (one multi-pattern), a few SDCs and one lonely 635a. I was also thinking of bringing along my H4n just for kicks, as I often like to capture performances from different spots in the house for reference later on when I'm mixing the tracks.

...maybe I shoulda put this in the recording section.

A sax mic and trumpet mic would be at a different height the trumpet would be straight on and level with his mouth and a sax would be lower and facing down towards the bell ... so ... give them their own microphone probably a 57 each.

BTW are you trying to catch up with me with an ownership of 57s? :D

Henry, you'll have to post a pic of your collection for us sometime. One day (when I win the lottery) I WILL catch up and surpass you on mic ownership! :P

Good point about the different mic heights. I don't know why that didn't occur to me.

I work with a lot of big bands and have horn sections as large as 27 members.

They will all tell you the height they want for their instrument - then if they stand to do a solo
