keith urban is a FANTASTIC guitar player and has a great tone. don't really care for a lot of his songs (esp the most recent album), but he's a lot of fun to see live. he's probably one of the best guitarists in music these days, and if he were in the rock genre instead of "pop country", he'd get a LOT more respect--kinda funny what genre can do for one's "street cred". he can give anyone a run for their money.

two other "modernish" country guys who are superb players are Brad Paisley and Vince Gill. I can't stand their songs, but those boys can play! i think vince gill is probably one of the best guitarists in country music--he just doesn't usually get to (or want to?) show it off very much. tasteful chops.

cheers,
wade

Country has always been where the insanely good guitar players come from. Rhubarb Red was an early Les Paul pseudonym, Chet Atkins, Roy Clark, Jerry Reed, and about a million studio cats in Nashville could burn with the best of all time. Unfortunately, the mediocrity endemic in all forms of commercial music condemns many a fine player to strumming C-F-G all night long whilst toothless dullards sway with their sisters on the dance floor. Eventually, there will be no reason to bother learning your instrument at all, as no one will have any interest in listening unless you play familiar, comforting changes with lyrics they can understand about NASCAR and heavy drinking.
Sorry about the rant, I must be suffering from heavy flow today.

Good Stuff!!! I have always assumed he was just a face and not a player as has been the Nasheville norm the last 10 years. Thanks for the link.

There are some good country players out there, but this guy is not one of them.Had he played the solo note for note and then added his .02 of wank
it would have been impressive.

I was really hoping to be impressed, but really wasn't. He is a bit better than I would have expected, but seems average at best.

My brother in law used to have a small country music show (those shows breed in the small towns around here) before he moved out of state. At his last show, a guy who had started learning guitar from my brother in law came on stage and blew the crowd away with a version of "Mr. Sandman" he'd learned off an old Chet Atkins record. The guy really captured the expressiveness and nuances of Atkins style of playing and was very humble about it. My brother in law was fuming because he'd always written this guy off as a no-talent. My brother in law has never been able to play with that level of expressiveness.

That tends to be a trait of an outstanding guitarist, or any other instrumentalist, for that matter...that "less is more" style of playing.
