If you had this mic...

I doubt it. The diaphragm is the same always. It won't sound like a small condensor or a ribbon or a dynamic. I'm sure each pattern is usefull for something, but if you only have one mic, you are already limited right there. I don't really see the point in using some freaky semi omni-figure8 pattern to record a simple vocal. You can forget about recording something like piano all together since as nice a mic it may be, it's very much mono.

Also, 4.5k is rediculously too much for any godsend piece of vibrating iron.

I happen to own such a mic and though it's a wonderfull sounding mic, it can't do every job.

i visited your studio site, it looks incredible. cozy too.

I'm sure there is something out there that a SM57 would sound better on.....

Richard from Rammstein uses that mic on his 100W guitar amp...

So I guess it's pretty versatile.

If I had a $500 pair of custom made Italian shoes, could I safely say I would never need another pair of shoes?-Richie

I'm sure it's a very fine mic...someday I hope to own one. For the same $ though, I'd rather own several good, but less expensive ones. No one mic will do all things equally well. This is a tube mic which will do an outstanding job on vocals, acoustical instruments, etc, but will colour others in a way that may not be the sound you want. Another thing to consider is what preamp will be used. A $5k mic through at $100 pre will still sound like a $100 recording...maybe $200 with a lot of work.
