I've decided on the M Audio 1010LT interface and I've located a console but I don't know what I need in terms of the PC. I'm getting one built by a friend but I don't know what to ask for.

WHat should I say to him? Baring in mind that I'm pretty poor. ;)

You could start with looking at the operating requirements for the 1010. You didn't say what you'd be using for recording/editing, but you need to consider this as well before you buy and build. Hope that helps...

Of course. Will do. I have a feeling that they'll say it will work with a Pentium I pocket calculator though. :)

I'm probably going to use Cubase for recording (and submixing a little).

Wavelab for editing and T-Racks for mastering.

Mobo: Asus A7N8X
CPU: AMD Barton 3000+ w/400mhz FSB
Ram: 1 gig Kingston, Crucial or major brand ram
HDD: Western Digital 80gig SE drive with 8mb cache (2 of them) 1 for apps and the other for wav files.

That would be a good start. You can also get the Asus board with SATA and go that route too!

Get an AMD Mobile Athlon XP 2400+. These things are fully unlocked and overclock very well. I have mine running @ 2.33GHz with a 333 fsb and it doesn't even get as hot as my XP 2500 . Get a MOBO with dual memory controllers as this makes a big difference. I have an ABIT NF-7s and an ALBATRON KX18D PROII and they are both good choices. Also if you get PC3200 memory you can crank up the fsb to 400 or better. [You need 2 matching sticks]
