hey guys. total newbie here with kind of an interesting question.....

if you had 10 grand to spend what equipment would you buy and explain how each piece works.

also what is everyones opinions on the guitar workstations like digitechs gnx3? is it a good bang for your buck or is it a waste of time. thanks guys.

Posts like this is a big waste of time. Let's see, we have a newbie section and an equipment forums where you could post this.

ANYWHERE BUT HERE!

OH, by the way, welcome to the BBS   :D

yeah ethier post it in the newbie section or use the search bar at the top of the site

or just buy a book

If I had $10,000, the equiptment I'd buy would be Thora Birch.

I don't know her agent, but I would imagine Thora's day rate to top $10k...

Maybe get a Winona Ryder instead?

Zing!

Yeah, $10G is always useful for getting out on bond. :D

Sad to say 10G's isn't enough to buy a setup that interests me anymore. :)

A) guitar workstations are crap and hold no resale value.

B) 10 grand is actually a good amount to spend on a starter studio. There is not a blanket answer to this without knowing what kind of music you will be recording and what your tastes are.

Do not go into a banjo mart mega store and ask for advice. Get advice from some one that understands recording and understands the used market. Buying smart and not rushing into it can help you stretch that money.

Let's start with two basic questions: what do you want to record? What is your room like?

hey gothenburg this is not an original way to get the "secrets from the pros" idiot newbs post this exact question about 432 times a week. "Hey guys interesting question for you" right very interesting. Anyway I'd buy a U87 which is a microphone that you sing or speak into, and the Manley Voxbox that is a vocal channel or "pre amplifier" which catches the signal from the microphone and makes it pretty by twisting knobs and stuff. 10 grand well spent huh?

i'd spend about $1,000 on a bunch of decent used equipment on ebay and save the rest up for a house.

If you're not interested then why are you posting?

Is it maybe to tell everyone how much of a big shot you are?

You really are a twat!

wow........ you just sucked the fun out of this thread.

I don't think he's trying to be a big shot - He just spends differently (so do I).

For some people, $10,000 is one "nice" compressor and one "nice" EQ.

For some people, $10,000 is one "nice" set of monitors.

For other people, $10,000 is 30 Behiringer compressors, 30 Behringer EQ's, and an 8' x 8' wall of Behringer Truth monitors.

It all depends on what your style, needs and wants are.

But you have to admit, the question is basically ridiculous on its face - "What equipment would you buy and explain how each piece works" - Really, can any of us give an answer to that without knowing a SERIOUS amount of detail?

And of course, Ronan's right - You can put together a usable setup with $10k, but again, without details, the question is unanswerable. What I would buy is totally different from what (?) would buy - Needs, wants, style.

Hmmmm...

How about:
$1400 Mackie HR824s Monitors
$1000 Custom Computer with an AMD processor (not the latest, but still nice) make sure you include at least two internal hard drives)
$60 MidiSport 2x2 MIDI interface
$350 Reason 3.0
$600 Cubase SX 3
$2850 Waves Diamond Bundle
$320 Antares Auto Tune
$1000 Motu 896HD Firewire Interface
$250 M-Audio Ozone Keyboard Controller
$2200 Universal Audio 6176 (this is your really nice pre and outboard compressor)
Whoops we are at 9950
Still need Mics
I'd grab
$160 2 SM57s
$200ish AKG D12
$800 Shure KSM141 pair
$700 Shure KSM44 LD vocal mic
$600 Rode K2 tube LD mic
Mic total $3460
Overall : $12,410
So think more like $15,000 because unless you inherited a studio already treated and you only need the equipment you will need furniture and acoustic treatments.
Do you have instruments?

He cracks me up with all that shit...

I haven't read a cloneboy post that doesn't alude to how much of a "professional" he is...

Anyway sorry to have sucked any fun out of the thread.... it's just that that level of fun involved was way below the level of fun that I have now... it just doen't interest me... I'm into mega superdupa fun now you peasants!

How about this one?

I totally suck. I don't know a thing about recording, mixing or mastering. I worship Handsome Al. I wish I had the aftertaste of his big winky in my mouth.

How's that?

Doesn't make me look like a big shot, now does it?

:D

I'd put 2.5k in GM (General Motors), 5k in SHLD (Sears Holdings), and 2.5k in FRK (Florida Rock) Hold those for the next year and you should have some nice growth and more money to buy equipment with. :)

I make a big payment on my student loan, thank you very much.
