If you could build a portable rig...

How would you build a portable recording rig with a main emphasis on live show recording? I'm looking at building a setup for doing just this... It has to be able to recieve feeds from the board (if the show has one capable of it), and also go inline between the mics on stage and the board they're running to if the board can't handle sending the signals out to the recording rig. What would you use for the audio capture on the laptop for the rig?

If you're going the laptop way, a Layla might be what you're looking for. 8 analog ins + spdif thru a PCMICA card into your laptop.

Through the mixer should be fine, although you might not get 8 tracks out. If you want to go between the PA and and the house mixer, you'll also need your own mixer or pres

Ideally, the house would be able to run direct outs to each in on the Layla, so you could get more isolated track definition. But I kinda doubt most clubs would do that for you, so you'd have to do a stereo out of the board, and then into the Layla.
