If you can't afford a U87 what's the next best thing???

Naw, but Henry (moresound) has advised to try one many times. I will likely throw Joly my NT1a soon just to see what happens. It is about worthless to me as it is now....

Just get a Gefell UMT70S - uses the original Neumann M7 capsule and is about one-third cheaper than a U87.

Still 3-pattern switchable like the U87.

That depends on where you send it. For Joly it will cost about $200 to $300. Other people will do just the electronics for $100. Of the one's I've tried Joly is the best.

Thanks, yeah the file comparison he has posted is pretty amazing, his mic sounds exactly like the U87 (in that comparison). The prices are very reasonable.

I don't know if it has already been mentioned (there's too many pages to sift through) but the Australian made BeesNeez Jade mic is really lovely.

They have a lot of different mics, mostly based on the U47/U48 and Telefunken capsules, but each with their own characteristic sound.

Not sure if this was mentioned, but there is a DIY U87 at GroupDIY. The mic body is ShuiYang SYT-8 (if I recall correctly) from "chunger" (US$189) the pcb's from "poctop" about US$30 or so, and you need to buy a dual backplate K-87 capsule clone (RK-87) (microphone-parts.com) I think is the website and I think it is about US$110, then of course the parts. There are several transformer options depending on how much you want to spend, I think between about US$45 to about US$100 if I remember. So US$500-$1000sh depending. poctop also has tapered boards if you want to use a smaller MXL taper type body.

I have a modded MXL V67. I actually made a test recording of it before sending it off. When I got it back..........the results were so different and stark that I didn't need to even listen to the test recording. You might ask if you can afford it. Well.......if you want a mic that performs as well as one that costs three times as much (and more) than the mod...........do it.
