Come on Beck you can do better than that! Dont hold back now :)

Hell I just got 3 rolls of 456 7 inch 1/4 that I bought new in 91 or 92. Its still in the sealed boxes and I dont know what to do with it. A friend of mine had it and he had bought it from me in 92 and it has sat in his house all of these years with out being opened.
I dont know if I should keep it or sell it or through it in the trash

I know I need to stop beating around the bush. :D

Your tape might be ok. It's not a given that it will have sticky-shed, but it might.

I have a couple old reels of "one pass" 1/2" Ampex, which I know does have sticky shed that I'm sure I could have sold for $50.00 each on eBay a couple weeks ago. But my mom took me to church every Sunday. So aside from my occasional use of 4-letter French terms, something must have sunk in.

Well, the guy openly admits the notoriously dubious year of manufacture, and mentions a possible sticky-shed issue. The guy has/had access to 16mm TV studio film stock (see his last viewable sold items), which makes his claim that the Ampex tape for sale was indeed stored correctly a bit more plausible. He even makes plain that the buyer could even discard the tape and use the 2" reels if he wants to. He's also got 100% feedback. I think you're being a bit harsh now.

BTW, we're all so proud of you for not selling your dodgy tape on Ebay. You must be one helluva guy.

Ahem, perhaps you should review the description:

"I will not guarantee that this tape is free of the sticky-shed problem although it is recent enough that it should postdate the manufacturing change that fixed the sticky-shed issue."

Anyone who has this much knowledge of sticky-shed and "climate controlled vaults" also knows the date of the manufacturing change is post 1990, specifically 1994. Yes, he mentions the notoriously dubious year of manufacture and then claims it is after the manufacturing change, when in fact it is in the middle of the worst possible time.

The seller had to address the sticky-shed issue because several other listings of late for new tape have made it an issue on eBay. No, I will not give this seller a pass because he is being dishonest, regardless of any other good reasons he gives for buying his tapes/reels.

If the winning bidder wants this for the tape the other reasons don't matter. And he has done everything he can in the description to persuade potential bidders that the tape is ok, without actually backing his sale with a return policy.

No please... I can't take any credit. It just doesn't take any effort at all to be one helluva guy in this day and age, considering the status quo.

I don't know who the "we" is that you're referring to, and I'm sure the rest of us don't know either. So I'll take that "compliment" as you speaking for yourself... But thank you so much, Robin... from all of us.

Not at all... you just saw it differently.

Everyone knows I can seem over the top sometimes. But if I spoke like William F Buckley no one would read my posts. :)

Hey Beck? I don't need to buy that tape to be a dumbass! :D

I can accomplish that all by myself!!!!

If you bought it for the seven vintage reels at the openning bid you wouldn't really be a dumbass. And you could use the tape to fly a kite -- really, really high!

:)

Guys, guys ... take it easy will ya !? (ala Rodney Dangerfield). Trust me, Tim (Beck) is one of the good guys! You know .... they still exist! ;)

Shit, if he'd be selling tape, I'd be the first one up! ;)

Now, lets go and find some pre '94 Ampex sellers to lynch! :D ;)

I know what a bass is but what is a dum?

Wait, are you talking about largemouth bass or smallmouth bass?

Dum... you know, fife and dum, The Little Dummer Boy, marching to the sound of a different dum... stuff like that.

Actually I think the way one spells dumbass depends on what part of the country you are from. Dumbass is the classical King James spelling. Dumass is actually pronounced doo-mis. The classical spelling was changed so as not to offend people who are really dumb. That is people who can't speak, as in deaf and dumb. But really dumb is anyone who can't speak and also anyone who shouldn't.

In the deep south the d is silent so it's pronounced "shit-head." and in German "Scheißekopf." The ancient Celts pronounced it "Edward"
