Okay, start dreaming. If money was not an issue what drum kit would you buy (including modifications) or what would your ideal kit comprise?

DW, DW, DW, DW...

2 snares, 4 toms, single bass - 10, 12, 14, 16 and 22 (mabey bigger) and cymbals as far as the eye can see. I think color would either be a blue pearl with gold hardware, or more of a natural color with wood hoops and black hardware. I really like the natural color so I'd probably go with the 2nd one.

Well since I haven't been playing that long (4 months) and haven't been exposed to a lot of various sets I'd have the resellers line up some kits for me to try.

1. Pearl Masterworks Customs (with 2-3 different woods and ply configurations)

2. Tama StarClassic

3. Yamaha Beech Customs (I did get to try this set and boy did it sound awesome).

4. DW or another high end kit that I've never seen or heard but folks say they're the best.

For cymbals I have a similar problem as the drum kits (lack of exposure) but ideally:

Crash:
Sabian AAXplosion 16"
Sabian HHX Manhattan Crash 18"
Some Zildjian assortment just so I could hear them on the kit.


Ride:
Sabian AA Rock Ride 21" (currently have and really like)
Sabian "Ping"? (I've heard this one is used by a lot of metal/rock drummers but never seen one in stores)
Sabian HH Raw Bell Dry Ride 21"

China:
Wuhan
Istanbul

Splash:
Bah, who needs a splash when you're rocking the house??

Hardware and other stuff:
NFC (No Friggen Clue) would have to do some serious reseach.. I guess that's common throughout my entire post but I'm desperately trying to get out of newbie status

Oh..and one more thing...lots and lots of recording goodies like mics, stands, pres, DAT's, digital recorders, etc...

Oh...lastly -- a really hot babe to help motivate me to play better...and take care of me when I'm sick...and maybe to laundry.

yamaha hipgig. It is portable, has smaller toms and an odd, tight yet thunderous kick drum. It sounds great, mics up nicely live and is awesome for recording. Without question the most delectable ride cymbal - the zildjian earth ride, t'is an ugly thang but it is the absolute bombalisciousness! Decent hats, crash and splash - total cost about 2 g's. There you have it, the ultimate kit.

DW Collector's Series in the 'Mapa Burl' Exotic Finish - assortment of bass drums (18, 20, 22) and toms (8,10,12,13,14,15,16) so I can have a set for any occasion (money was no object, right??)

assorted cymbals (probably mostly Zildjians) including 13" K dark hats and 22" K Constantinople Big Band Ride (two cymbals that I have currently coveting)....also 16" China Boy High and 14" QuickBeat HiHats

Bedubs - I actually have a Yamaha Beech Custom (22bass, 10,12,14,16 toms) and it is SWEET - Yamaha has actually just discontinued the line so you probably get them pretty cheap!! (I'm actually looking to get an 8" tom - don't really need it but I'll never again be able to buy it new in the color of my kit)

I've seen the Beech Custom in the $1100-$1200 range. At that price it's a steal. Although there are many great sounding drums, I think I would go with Ayotte they have a very warm sound. DW would be an acceptable option! Sabian HH series cymbals (or Zildian K Customs) with Wuhan for the China's (I know money is no object, but I really like the sound of the cheap Wuhans). Oh yeah and a set of the new Roland V-Session.

Mine would be a Dunnett kit. Ronn D makes custom made Stainless Steel drums in Canada.
I'd want the same sizes that I have (8"x14" snare; 10"x15" mounted, 14"x18" & 16"x 20" floor toms, and 28" Kicks-but I would want 20"x28" Kicks, instead of the 16"x28" that I currently have ....and I'd want the entire kit in a "free-floating model", and use a Gravitator Custom Rack (made by Dr. Killdrums of Savatage) with Mics and triggers built in.

Tim, intersting rack system - I have to be honest I had not heard of it previously. It looks like it would be heavy, but for a combination rack/riser it may be worth the weight. By the way 28" kicks? They must be cannons!! You must order your heads, I don't think I can recall seeing any 28" heads in stock in any of the stores around my area. I thought I was bold going back to a 22" after several years using a 20".

Hi Mike,

I got hooked on big Kickdrums several years ago... I can crank the tension on them up so there's a ton of rebound, and man when I'm doublekicking, it feels like walking on air!
I'm a John Bonham head, so in 1998 I built a cusom made replica of his "In Through The Outdoor" kit, although I did mine in Maple and not Stainless Steel like Bonzo's Ludwig set was.


Yep that Rack system is heavy...it's not for the faint of heart, it's somewhat expensive...but then again, I put all my money into this stuff anyway! Hahaha!

(My favorite quote? "But Honey, I need that Axis hi-hat stand to go with my other Axis pedals-I might sprain my ankle while trying to go from the bass drum to the hi-hat!""
