If I get a really good recorder, I'm going to need some good Mics

I'm dreaming about getting a harddisc recorder or something. But if I end up shelling out a few grand into that how much should I plan on spending on compreable Mics/Cords/Preamps? One possible unit I am considering is the Akai dps24. I read that has decent pre amps so I might be able to hold off on those. But I would need drum mics and a mic for vocals and guitar. Or would it be better to use the line out on the guiar?

Along with the cost what mics would you suggest?

Thanks

AT ATMPRO25 - kick drum $59

Shure SM57 - snare drum,guitar amps $79

Marshall MXL603's - stereo overheads,acoustic guitar $150/pr

for vocals, try:
Studio Projects B1-$79
Studio Projects C1-$199
Marshall MXLv67-$99
Marshall MXL2003-$150
Marshall MXLv69-$299

Will the MXL603's sound good on toms?
Since they're the overheads, they'll be getting the cymbals and the toms...

i use a pair of 603's as overheads. they get me a pretty good drum sound (great on the snare), but they're a little "trashy" sounding on the cymbals in my room. i've got a combination of A's (crash and hats) and scimtar bronze (cheapo zildjian ride, crash), along with a wuhan china and K splash, all in a room that pretty much sucks.

mostly, it's that the 603s have a bit of a hyped high end (common to a lot of a chinese mics), so they're gonna sizzle a little more on cheaper (and cheaper sounding) cymbals, and worse in a bad room. with Ks in a good, dead room, they'd prolly sound pretty good.

so, for me, in my room, they do better than anything else i've got thus far. i need to go to richmond and get to GC and pick me out a set of MC012s, just to see how they contrast. i guess i could use my B1 as a mono overhead, but i've got a big kit and will sacrifice better sound for a stereo image, since i can't close-mic the drums when recording a full band (only 10 tracks going into the computer--i use 4 for drums). i need another delta 1010. :D

so, they'll "do" in a pinch.....but they're not 451s, c42s, u89s or km84s by a long shot.

Thanks mrface.
I alreadyhave an MXLv67g, should I get another and use them as overheads?

I used one as a mono, and it doesn't sound too bad...

i'm not gonna tell you to or not to use it......simply if you think it sounds good, then go with it.

certainly i'm sure i could pick worse mics than a pair of 603's as overheads. they definitely do the job and provide me a good stereo image of the kit. i would suspect that cymbal choice and my room have a lot to do with it as well.

they just "suffer" from that high-end sizzle (hype/freq bump) that a lot of chinese mics "suffer" from. conversely, i'm guessing that's partly what makes them sound so nice on my Martin D15.

although, FWIW, i wouldn't be surprised if the V67G shows a similar sizzle/hype. i've not used one, so i can't tell ya and certainly that mic has run the gamut of being in favor and then falling out of favor on this board, but pretty much every reviewer has mentioned a bit of a high-end bump. i'll pick one up one of these days. it's just that my RE38 is working wonders as a vocal mic for me these days and i haven't had the desire to run out and buy something else. :D
