im just starting to get into recording.. i was wondering if i got a mixer now (probably a m8) can i record some simple tracks into my soundcard.. audigy 2? i dont have enough money at this point in time to buy everything i want at once.. i just put a bunch of money away in an IRA account.. so i was thinking of getting a mixer.. and a couple of mics.. and keep the soundcard i have for now.. will i be able to record my electric and acoustic guitar with this? i will later be buying a new soundcard for my drums but that is a few months off.. thanks for the help..

Sure.

When your starting out you might as well get the gear, start learning, asking questions and develop a taste for things. M8 will be fine for teaching you basics of simple routing and monitoring. Have you decided on a software package for handle the recording? May I suggest N-Track if your in your infancy. Simple to use and there are lots of users here to help.
Yeah, I remember when I started. Should have started earlier and with less knobs.

I just had an idea... is there anyone who has ever mapped out a plan to where your going. If your heading in the DAW direction I would suggest not getting the M8, but rather a interface like MOTU or Digidesign (just as examples). If your heading in the direction of hybrid where you mix analog into a master recorder then the list is different, Id get the M8 and look fwd to converters, outboard stuff etc...

I own an M8 and Im very happy with it. You'll get at least 2 simultaneous tracks out of the SB card you got- its a start- Not many people around here recomend it, but if you already have it- then use. the M8 has a digital output so if the audigy has a digital in as well as the analog in you may even get 4 simultaneous tracks- have fun- your gear will grow with you in good time

How much are you getting your M8 for? I'm asking this because Joel at Full Compass (800-356-5844 x1116) got me an M12 for less then someone in one of my classes got his M8. Just giving you a heads up.

yea i might spring for an m12. after looking around, i see it isnt much more than the m8.. only about 100 bucks for 4 extra mono channels.. the lowest price i have seen so far is at zzounds.. $699 for the m12.. is that too much? other places ive looked were about $750.. thanks for the heads up..

I don't really remember exactly how much it was, but I swear it was around the tune of $590. Give joel a call and ask him. He gives really great deals on pretty much anything (I sound like I work for him).
