My question is: If i bought this little number-->http://www.zzounds.com/a--2676837/item--EMU1820 , and a mic, would it be all i need to start recording? What else would be beneficial?

I'm a 17 year old who wants to start learning the ins and outs of recording and I want to start building a play-studio out of my computer. I don't have bunches of money but this thing seems very good for the price according to reviews.

Any help is appreciated, thank you.

Give Sweetwater Sounds a call on their 800 number and ask for a sales rep. Tell him/her you're shopping and ask the same question about the gear you illustrated.

You should get a good answer as SS wants to sell you gear. Sweetwater has become pretty user friendly in the past couple of years.

You can also call any other vendor 800 number and ask.

Green Hornet's advice is good. Sweetwater prides themselves on the fact that they offer genuine customer support - with a knowledgeable sales staff. Also, to answer your question, the E-Mu plus a mic would be enough to get you going. Basically, you need a mic, a pre-amp, an interface, a computer, and some sort of software to record in. The E-Mu gives you all those (minus the mic) - so you should be set. It's also pretty expandable with the ADAT - you could eventually go to 16 separate channels (at least) with that thing. Also, the quality is supposed to be pretty good, though I don't have any experience with E-Mu stuff. Another company to look into would be M-Audio - it's pretty popular and user friendly. I use an M-Audio card and I'm pleased with it.

mm. it would help to post your confign in full of your pc , including what you have in your pci slots. any network cards ? tv cards ? etc etc...
