I'd really like to record outside.

Anyone ever do this? Like out in a wide open field with no reflection or "room" sound whatsoever? All the mics get is the exact sound being made. No room influence at all. Totally dry. I'd like that.

I'd like to try that out too. I think the only thing you'd have to deal with is wind noise. Could be interesting to have a go with at least.

I've thought about this alot too. I think recording outside would turn out to sound really good.

There's a big field right outside of my house and in the summertime (on days that aren't too windy), I sometimes go out and record some simple acoustic stuff. The sounds of the birds adds an a great authenticity to the recordings. I'd like to record near a brook sometime too.

Lol. I don't know about all that. I just want dry recordings, not birds and earth and kumbaya. :D

Yes, I have done a little recording on my deck, on a calm day, sounds very nice until a truck or plane goes by. But I get the same thing with truck while in my "studio". Live on a busy street.

Birds and earth and kumbaya? hahahaha. that's hilarious.

seriously though, sometimes a song calls for "special effects". why add them in artificially, when they can be provided naturally? it's not something i'd want in every tune but occasionally, it's exactly what is needed.

besides, if you record outside, how could you really avoid something like that? it'd be a hell of a lot of work to try and remove it from the recording when editing/mixing.

I thought the idea of recording outside not to long ago. Seems like a unique concept. Just make sure you bring an extra-long extension cord:listeningmusic:

I would think you'd have ambient noise problems - birds, cars, passersby, etc. And even if it's not particularly windy, I would think there would still be enough air movement going across mic screens to screw things up.

But I don't know - I never tried it.

I`m thinking if they (whoever "they" are..LOL)..can get a decent sounding recording of a band doing an outside concert with 50,000+ screaming people, then surely Greg_L can pull off something worth the while..

of course location is gonna be a big one obviously..but still..I don`t see why not..

After dealing with electricity and weather (esp. wind and moisture), it's definitely worth the effort. I've done it in a live festival type environment (still lots of stage noise, but way easier than an indoor live recording) and as a controlled studio type recording. That's where it shines--very nice indeed.

Well really this was just a hypothetical idea. My original intent included no birds, bees, airplanes, wind, cars, trains, buses, planes, etc. Just a wide open virtually infinite space with no noise.

I think it's a great idea. Better than Ace Frehley's one of recording an album in outer space.

I'm sure you could do it somewhere, in the dead of night when the buses and trains have stopped, the wind is no longer crying Mary, the car drivers are safely tucked up in bed, the birds and the bees have gone south for winter and you said planes twice. :D

The Cave....?
Oh wait...you said with NO noise. ;)

Since it is probably not something one can experience...I would guess that a virtual space with no noise and no reflections would be no different than an anechoic chamber...and they tend not to be the best places to record.

We do seem to "fight" the whole ambiance thing in our rooms...acoustic traps and what not...and the people who erroneously (IMHO) overdo the broadband trapping, eventually start to approach an anechoic chamber, which sounds....."dead".
I think if one could record in some virtual infinite space...they would ultimately add ambiance during the mix as it wouldn't sound that great. Of course, with the infinite space you would not have to deal with the bad ambiance stuff either.
I guess I just don't think it would be as rewarding as it might seem. I think just a nice big room with some natural good ambiance probably makes for better recrording...but WTF do I know about that as I don't have the infinite space or the nice big room! :D

Well for me, I add very little ambience to my recordings. I'm damn near fully anti-reverb and use only a touch of delay on vocals. But yes, bad ambience is what I'd like to avoid in the field of recording dreams. Like you said, I can always add it later. I'd rather add it as I see fit than be forced to deal with it. I'd bet that most of us don't have good "live" rooms. I'd bet most of us track and mix in the same space. They can't be both a good mixing room and a good tracking room. They can be adequate for either, but not truly good for both. My tracking room is a better mixing room and I prefer it that way.

I totally get what you are saying. It's hard to get everything perfect in a single-room studio, but yeah, you can get it to where it works good enough.
I kinda' tried to "split" my room into two different spaces by treating one half one way and the other half differently...and it worked out OK, though certainly not ideal by any stretch.

huh, I swear I have actually witnessed a real video of this being done for real on a professional level...

Fuck if I can remember it though I think it was a couple years ago I saw it, they were doing it in the desert and built some sort of shack type of building for the gear and had the amps and shit just out in the open.

so your thinking of maybe setting up a lil`somethin somethin on the dark side of the moon perhaps??
kidding..but funny post man..

"My original intent included no birds, bees, airplanes, wind, cars, trains, buses, planes, etc"...hahaha..LOL

That`d be a good sig!!! I should steal it..LOL
