Hi,

I've recently purchased an Apple Ibook second hand with 500mhz, 384mb ram a 10gig hard drive and os 10.3 with firewire and usb. I know it's not the most powerful machine, especially by todays standards but I'm sure it will suffice to do some recording with. I was wondering what would be the best audio interface to work with my lap top. I'm willing to spend a bit of money if the benifits will justify it. I already have a mackie 1202 mixer, and a buncha mics.

Thanks for your help.

the Firewire Audiophile would work well for you, if you already have a mixer with pre's. You may want to go to www.pbfixit.com and read how you can upgrade the hard drive.

How would the performance of that power book compare to the performance of a Power Mac g4 500mhz or 450mhz?

That depends upon whether or not the application being used is altivec-optimized. In some cases it'll be very similar. In others, the G4 would stomp it.

Im most likely going to be buying a g4 500 or something similar but no less than 450mhz and I was just wonder how performance would be on mabey cubase se.
Not to steal the thread or anything but I use a 1.2ghz celeron running sonar se for work with another studio and they are switching to mac and just wonder how a g4 would perform.

I've got a 500mhz iBook sitting next to me and it's slow even when browsing the web. I doubt it could handle more than 2 tracks at a time.

Powermac G4 has a bit higher bus speed than the iBook G3 though.

Still... I don't think anything under 800mhz is a smart idea. You get a (more than likely) slower machine that you expect, just to test the proverbial Mac waters, and the switch isn't very satisfying.

Good thing someone cleared that up for me. Time to get that 64bit amd setup ive been craving for.

When you say they're going to Mac, do you mean they're going to Mac but using Pro Tools, or they're going to Mac and using Logic or DP?

Because you'd be much better off with a Gateway M250 or something similar with a Centrino setup, running Pro Tools LE (if that's indeed what the studio uses; PT) using like a Firewire 410 or MBox.

You'd pretty much get the full 32 track limit of PTLE/M-Powered with that computer, if you swap the internal HD to a 5.4k and use a FW HD for the audio.

Not that I don't like Mac; I do. It's just that they're in such a state of flux right now, and getting an obsolete Mac when newer Centrino-based laptops are around the corner (also potentially cheaper too) it just seems like a bad idea.

I just got my laptop fixed (screen to motherboard connector went bad) So that it'll last me well into this transition of Apple's, so I can make the decision of either getting an Intel-based iBook, or sticking with Win-based books. I'd rather wait until then though, so I can make a fair decision.

Because if I were to get a new book now, it'd more than likely be win-based.

People are blowing the Intel/Apple thing way out of proportion. It'll be a year or two until they start shipping. And it won't be ground-breaking technology, it will just be better than what's out now... which is exactly how all technology works. 64-bit CPUs have been out for a while... huge difference from 32-bit? No. "But it's twice as many bits!"

The lower end Macs and laptops will be out next year. 64-bits, if you've read anything about it, does make a significant difference when you're running a 64bit OS with 64bit software.

"Why buy a 64-bit CPU? They're coming out with a 128-bit one in 3-4 years."

I find it an advantage to stay behind the leading technology. You'll save a lot of money that way. Think about it. Once those machines roll out, they're going to be expensive. Wait a few months and the price drops. Wait a few more and it drops again, and they unveil a new product.

It should be mentioned that, as it currently stands, Yonah will not be 64-bit when it is released.

Really? Someone said it would have EMT64. Oh well.

I guess it's been widely speculated that, just like the previous iteration of the P4, that the 64-bit extensions will be in there. The question is, will they be turned on?
