Ibanez RG not staying tuned

I recently picked up a new RG and it came with a floyd rose. I dont much like floyd rose's but the guitar was a good deal. The guitar isnt staying tuned well and I saw a kid at a Battle of the bands show that had the same guitar and the same problem. I would have to say this is mainly a floyd rose problem. Anyone know for sure about this? Other than that the guitar plays great and sounds great.

I don't know anything about your guitar, but I have an old Kramer Biretta with a floyd that could be hit by a truck and still be in tune.
 
If its any RG with the excepton of the 570 series it will have the TRS II trem on it. My personal view is that its incapable of staying in tune. I know because I have one, I Ive used them in the past. There are only a few that really stay in tune well, one is the original Floyd, the Edge on high end Ibies and the Schallers. You might want to save up for either another guitar with one of those options, save up for a floyd to replace the trs one or learn to deal with having to make the best of it. Ive chosen the last choice to be choosed. The nut could need replacing IMO as well.

I have a similar Ibanez and I had the same problem until I got it setup properly by a tech. The tension has to be set exactly right. I tried messing it with for hours and couldn't do it but for $35 the tech had it playing and tunning beautifully.

One note: When you change the strings only change one at a time so the tension is not relieved off of the bridge. I pulled all of mine off and that is how the frustration began.
 
I've had a few floyd rose's in my daze and I hate them. I found the best thing to do when changing strings is to do the Tex method, but you can also use a block or something and set it under the bridge to keep the floyd from floating. String up and tune. Tune many times with the block and then without the block. That's how my tech did mine. He used some popcycle sticks. I've used a cassette tape and it worked, too. As far as staying in tune in general, does it go out of tune or is the guitar out of tune with itself in certain spots? Intonation might be your problem.
 
Yes it has a TRSII . Taking it to a tech sounds like the best way to go. Thanks all for the advice. I am also picking up a Hamer soon. Also want a Ibanez 7 string without the floyd rose....
JR - I used to have a Kramer so I know how to block up the FR. I use a cassette also. Its going out of tune slighty on a daily usage basis. Im probably going to have a tech replace the FR....And reintonate it. Not sure what to replace it with yet though. Any advice?

The springs in the back retain memory. They like it where they're at. If you try to tune too much, they'll try to return to thier original tension.
I have an Ibanez S series. Floyd Roses do suk. maybe someday, the manufacturers will caatch on to this.
 
I got my start making god damn floyd roses stay in tune!!!

IF you REALLY want em solid you got two choices:

1: hipshots tremsetter

2: kahler's autolatch , which they dont make anymore since about '92...the trend driven, conformist heavy, guitar industry decided to go full on retro and make guitars with crap tremolos, crappier tuners, noisy pickups, and baseball bat necks as the norm, so innovative products like this are history...MOST guitars today arent much better than they were in the 50's which is great if you like the 50's stuff, and for a lot of things thats just fine, but we oughtta have more choices, look at the variety of basses and bass gear!

Pick up a copy of Dan Erlewine's Guitar Player Repair Guide and you wont be sorry.

With a tremsetter, you can set iut up so well that you can even BEND without the tremolo dumping forward ( try that with a stock American Standard trem )

the autolatch will grip your trem so tight you can pop a string and still forget you had a tremolo
 
I had a fender strat I put a kahler on and I loved it. It figures they dont make em anymore. Thanks for the tip....I will check out the trem setter...

i had an rg550 and for years it stayed in perfect tune, and i did a lot of whammy crap.

go figure.
