Just Killing Time
Over the next few months I'll be working with a band from Dublin (i lives there :D)
and we'll be doing an EP.

NOW!

They have recorded a demo, and it sounds demo-esque, for two reasons.

1)the audio quality - which I'm not concerned with right now.

2)the production/songwriting etc. - which I want some opinions about.

If you guys have a few spare minutes, I'd appreciate if you check out this link,
listen to the songs (they're pretty good IMO), and tell me what you liked/didn't
like.
It'd be a big help.

Do it, and I'll be your friend foreverest :D:D

I listened to all three songs and found nothing I didn't like about the band. I liked the arrangements, sounds, words, ETC. I think they have potential. Good luck.

The drums could stand to come up a lot. The vocalist sometimes gets a little pitchy. It sounds like he's not so confident about hitting the notes, which makes him waver and miss the notes.

Otherwise it sounds pretty good.

Listening to Against the Grain.

Sounds pretty good. Good performance, songwriting, production.

I agree, Chili. "Against the Grain" is a good song, but I also agree with Steve's comments (but the vox and production are still better than mine!).

BTW, and I apologize for hijacking this thread, but I listened to quite a few of Chili's songs as well. Excellent stuff! I enjoyed all of the ones I listened to so far and plan to hear more. That is my kind of music and certainly among some of the best I've heard on HomeRecording or Soundclick! Great work!

Cheers,
Joseph

hello, i think the vocal style is the best part and stands out to me, i think that could be built upon and emphasized more to make it better. Then along with that, the guitar drums, etc could liken itself more to the vocal style in its own way.

thanks & good luck

Wow Joseph. Thank you very much. I certainly wouldn't say the best on HR or soundclick, but I appreciate the thought!!! Are you sure you want to listen to more??? There's quite a few I want to pull because they are disasters!!!

Back to the thread at hand. Sorry. :o

I'm liking it! Everything sounds good. I agree about the pitch of vocals and audio quality, but it's great.

The songwriting is too square. Too much emphasis is being put on the instrumental performances, and the vocalist doesnt have a charismatic enough voice to stand out amongst all the volume and riffing and drumming. The lyric writing is a bit weak.

If i was to produce them, i would tell them to rewrite the lyrics to sound more like music and less like narrative. Then i would back off heavy overdubs and doubling tricks until the midway points of either song parts or the song itself. The music as it is doesnt breathe because the writing/arranging is weak. Even when the "breaks" come they are just slight variations of the same intensity the listener has already experienced up to that point. The only way to begin to solve that without rewriting or rearranging is clever restraint in regard to where the doubled guitars etc come in and go out in the recorded version of the song.

I would also possibly try having the backup vocal be sung like 4 feet away from the mic or more for this style of music.

Don't sell yourself short. BTW, I said, "..among some of the best..." ;) I am judging the songwriting, which is certainly among some of the best to my ear. I really like this style of music, and you've penned some very good to great ones, IMHO.

I didn't listen to the country songs. Not my flavor. Heh.

Cheers,
Joseph

Hi guys,
Apologies, I've been away from you :(

But I've missed ye too much, and I'm back :D

I've read through everything you guys have said and am very appreciative,
some great tips from all of you. And even the non-suggestion ("I liked it as it is")
posts were a good help (for obvious reasons I hope).

Now, new update. I've talked to the guys and I don't even think they're doing
any of those songs on this EP.

I'm very upset, I loved those songs and their style. However, they could blow
me away with much better stuff. Always exciting :)

If I run into any serious problems, I'll come running for help :D:D

Thanks again guys :D
