OK. Have been all over this newsgroup, just browsing, now I'd like to ask for some help. I have played with recording myself a few times in the past, but wasn't that succesful. Need to start from scratch. I am on "no budget," meaning, I got what I got. Bear with the long post!

1. I currently own a PIII-600 Xeon (dual proc.)
turtle beach montego
Kenwood Amp running Bose 301, and LS 353's

Great music, using it as a MP3 player in "my room"

I do have other computers, but I'd like to use this one to keep it dediicated for my project.

2. Les paul, Marshall G50R, Korg AX100G Toneworks

Been playing for 15 plus years, have NEVER taken myself seriously.

The Korg is a wonderful effects pedal, plus drum machine.

What software would be reommended, something not to expensive. Any web-sites out there I could go and check out for help?

TIA

If you haven't taken your music seriously in over 15 years you should just quit man. Hang it up. Stop holding onto these fucking dreams - Realize they are just that - dreams.

If you haven't been able to apply yourself in 15 years, what makes you think you can do it now? Stop wasting your time & money.

Right ON dude. Making friends right away on your 4th post!

You go!

ingo. please tell me about your drives on that xeon dual processor machine.
this interests me. to see how much we could squeeze out of that sucker
for few bucks.
being a puter engineer it interests me.
how much memory you got ? what OS ?
do you have mics and a mixer ?
you will need a mixer and mics to lay down vocals for example.
if you want dirt cheap for recording vocals - find a used cassette deck ,
and plug in a cheap dynamic into the mic input of the cass dek.
(you might need an xlr to 1/4 inch convertor from radio shack if your mic is xlr terminated). or the cheapest step up i know is a mca sp1 mic (some pro's like them) into a behringer 100 mic pre for a cost of about 100 bucks.
hope this helps.

When I said "seriously", I meant, not joining a band, spending millions to impress other people, sucking the publics ass.......I take my music seriously! I play for the enjoyment that it gives me. I've been in a band or two, and always end up with someone wanting to be the next "hero." When I was expected to please someone else's ego, then it stopped being fun, so I decided long ago not to go that route. I play for myself, my family and occasionally for friends. (had to get that of my chest, but don't want to get sucked in to a flame war, already went to a "real one" and my guitar kept me and my buddies sane.)

I have a friend who also plays guitar and sax, and we've decided to give some home-recording a try. He wants to mic his stuff, then record and give me a copy. I want to do the same, but use my computer to do it. Maybe, mix it together? we live about 2 hours apart, so getting together to jam is kinda diffcult, but we have a few times in the past.

anyway, here's a breakdown of what I have to work with. Don't take this as me bragging, 'cause by no means is it quality stuff, just stuff I've collected over the years for "my enjoyment."

just a re-hash of equipment I have available. Buying new equipment can be pricy as I live in Europe now. I could always mail-order, though.

Les paul Standard (bought it years ago in a pawn shop when I lived in the states)
Marshall G50R (you'd be surprised how much this cost over here, I got it for a song from a guy who was broke)
Korg digital processor (love how many different sound combinations it has)
Fender F-210 Acoustic (cheapo, but sounds great, and the last year it was made completly on the states, all wood including the bridge!)
Takamine/Jasmine Acoustic

What we really want to start with is recording acoustic material, then putting some electric on top of it.

system 1:
Dual 600B Xeons @652mhz
512DDR 400mhz @ 412mhz
80GIG Western Dig. 7200rpm
120GIG Mator 7200rpm
Promise EIDE Contoller 133mhz
ATI9200 128mg
Turtle Beach Montego (92db, better than the creative I had)
Kenwood 100w amp w/ Bose 301 and LS-353's

system 2:
Sager 2.6 P4 (laptop)
512DDR
40GIG 7200rpm
ATI 90000 128mg
CD-RW
AC97 on board
Boston Acoustics 7

I really would like to use the first box and run software that will allow me to learn the basics of recording myself, then giving him the tracks, and he puts his on top. Is this possible? Could I mike my amp and run straight into the computer? or should I go direct from the Korg? If I by a small mixer, what all do I need to make it work?

Hope this post isn't taken as a "look what I got!", just some basic info to see what I have to go on.

ok - heres my recommendations.
i would record guitar tracks two ways for different flavours . miced and try the korg. unless your amp has specifically a PROPER recording output AND IT SAYS SO. i would mic the amp.
cheapest route to mic the amp is a microphone into a yamaha mg mixer
feeding the montego line in.
for recording multitrack software that i like try the demoes of ntracks,
powertracks and magix music studio (both i use and love),and multitrackstudio.com.
one thing you could which would help me know a little more about your system capabilities is to download the demo of powertracks from pgmusic.com and up in the menus it has a test to assess how many tracks
you can run. then try some test recordings. tell me if you get any
cracks or problems or if the audio is fine. you can use your korg for this into line in of the sound card. if you see over 40 tracks, you should be fine.

Thanks! I'll give your suggestions a try. Had to move some stuff around to give myself some to hook everything up, I live in a small apartment. I'll post back and let you know how things turn out. Again.....THANKS!
