Need advise on best quality and price for recording software.
Want something that will take out pops and scratches and provide
best overall recording quality for old 45s with wide range of fidelity and amplitude. Can anyone help?
Thanks,
Rick 2

just for getting things into the computer, one program isnt going to be better than the next for quality.

I suggest n-tracks............... 45 dollars at fasoft.com

I'd go with Sound Forge. They have some great vinyl restoration plug-ins.

Cakewalk Pyro 2004 is designed to be used for recording records and tapes into the computer...it costs between $30 and $50 (depending on if you download the program from Cakewalk over the internet or have the software shipped to you, and also if you are registered as a previous owner of Cakewalk software). you can read more about it at...

http://cakewalk.com/Products/Pyro/default.asp

when you record a song with Pyro 2004 it becomes a wave file on your computer...then you can edit the wave file (crop/fade out, EQ, noise reduction, loudness maximize, FX) and save it to your harddrive, burn it to CD, or make it into an MP3 (which you can send over the internet). It does have a feature designed to deal with pops and clipping but I have never needed to use this feature (I have only tranferred cassette music to my computer, mostly music I have made myself)...When I have just experimented with the poping and clipping feature I found that using it seemed to have a detrimental effect on the sound. I find also that if I use noise reduction, that I can only use very little or it really compromises the sound. I do find the EQ, loudness maximize, and the FX to be very useful on Pyro 2004...I an not familiar with other recording/editing programs...probably Pyro 2004 is not cutting edge technology (compared to a program like Sound Forge, which I assume is a much more powerful program) but it is inexpensive and user-friendly.

Check out MAGIX audio cleaning lab 2005:

http://site.magix.net/index.php?13550

"Record, restore and burn: MAGIX audio cleaning Lab 2005 is the ideal choice for sound restoration on the PC. Automatically remove crackles, clicks and rumbling to clean music from your LPs, cassettes and MP3s. One click gives you perfect sound."

You already have a DAW right ? What's the budget - this guy is about $30.

Adobe Autidion, very complete setup for restoration, easy to use, good results: www.adobe.com
Dart Pro, very complete, bit less intuitive, good results, limited to 16-bit audio: www.dartpro.com
Diamond Cut: very complete, ot my favorite, but others swear by it: www.diamondcut.com

Beware of all programs that promise to do the job with a single click! Restoration need time, patience and listening to several results. You will very likely end up hating the music you restored for the next 5 years.

Thanks

I've downloaded a few systems and like the diamond cut dc5 (6 not avbl for review) the best so far.
Thanks for your input.
