But the guy who said $550 was a stupidly good deal for the Fender will probably hate a new Yamaha.

I have nothing against buying a Yamaha, my basses are far wierder than that! My point was, at $550, if you don't like the J RI, you can get all of your money back on eBay, and maybe even turn a profit.

I'm curious, what is it about the Mexican made P-Basses that people don't like? Is it the build quality, or is it different components, or is it both? I have a fairly decent Yamaha bass, but I love the sound of a good P-Bass. Would I just be wasting my money buying a Mexi-P-Bass?

Thanks for the info and the tips people! I appreciate it!

This deal gets more tempting byt he hour! I dont think I'll get a better deal by driving to Omaha and testing all the other brands, or by surfing ebay......

But I have to admit, the Stingray was really nice, the PV Cirrus was nice, and the Rick's were great!

This '62 Jazz RI is a huge improvement (for my hands) over the P Lyte I'm trading in. And I desperately need the other $450 bucks for monitors!

It will most likely be mine today or tomorrow! Thanks again for letting me know this is a decent deal! - SC

I have never bought any MIM instrument, only because every oldtimer luthier I spoke with over the years told me to avoid them.......so I have. The one I trusted the most, London's Luthiers, told me every MIM axe they saw needed major adjustment or work to make it play right and stay in tune......according to their standards.

So I never bought one. I've stuck with JP and USA only.....

I STRONGLY suggest you buy new.

Why? I don't buy anything new if I can avoid it. If you buy used wisely, i.e. check out what you are buying thoroughly for both condition and mkt value, then you can get better quality for the same money, and if you change your mind, the resale value will be closer to what you paid. That is, unless you can get in your WayBack machine and purchase a new '59 Les Paul... ;^)

I got my Alembic 5 string used for about $1200; it's in great shape. I love it and play it every day, and it lists for about $4500. I love that $3300 I didn't spend, too!

Because you never know what someone else has done to that intrument. Or how it was cared for, how it was stored, how much beer has been spilled in it.....of course there is always the emotional value of being the first owner of an instrument. I like to think I have imprinted something of myself on my gear. It becomes part of me...and I would not be too enthused about buying a piece of someoen else....unless I really needed to. :)

Well, of course; like I said, I'd check it out thoroughly before buying. I'd never buy a guitar on eBay. The emotional value of being the first owner is, to me, rarely worth more than the money I save buying used. The biggest depreciation on anything new happens instantly when you write the check for it. Many items go down in value by half.

I, personally, could care less if an instrument is used, as long as it was taken care of. You can get a lot higher quality of an instrument for a lot less money when you go used--just make sure you check it out first or if you dont know what to look for, have someone that does take a look at it. Yeah, if youre rich, go ahead and buy new. If youre not, at least consider it.

"USA Music Man Stingray.....doesn't stock Bongo because they dont sell? hmmmm....... "

What, do they sell one of a kind, $1500-1600 basses like candy or something?

I have a stealth bongo 5, and i am 200% overly satisfied with everything about it--the killer, extremely versatile tone, its incredibly smooth action, and to me--the coolest look ive ever seen in a bass. ive even seen them used, or new (if some of the afformentioned retailors have a hard time unloading one) for around $1000... so keep one on your list. Its definately not for everyone, but if its for you, good luck putting it down.

good luck with whatever you go with... for that amount of money, its hard to go wrong. just make sure you go for something that feels right for you.

shameless plug: im selling my old bass if anyone is interested... ill be listing it in the FS section soon. bad part: its a dean. good part: its pretty much the nicest bass dean makes, dean edge PRO V with EMG pickups and a beatiful finish. i know, here i am selling mine online after i told people to make sure they check out used instruments before they buy em... eh, im not a salesman.

here is the deal I actually bought and swallowed....
