I want to build my dream kit 1111

First, I' a bass player but have been programming my machines for 15 years, cause I play mostly dou's and trio's. I find lots of guys with drums, but no drummers. I tab and chart for them but it's right over their heads.
I been recording with my machine collection, but I always hear the " it's to mechanical sounding".
I figure I'll start playing myself ! What I need from you guys is some recomindations on drum brands and setups.
All I want for now is a kick drum that is DEEP, solid, tight....no ringing...something that will cave in a chest at 50 yards...vintage ?
second...a snare that sounds like a shotgun.....no rattley crap and DEEP..WHAM...my machines I usaully use a med. piccalo and tune it down.
third, HH cymbals ? size ? brand ?
fourth, combo crash/ride...size ?.....brand ?
I would prefer a kick with no tom mounts...just a deep solid kick.
I don't want any toms.....just kick, snare, HH, combo crash/ride.

Get your self some pearl drums and zildjian cymbals... I just go a "Deep" snare drum from england and it has the shot gun sound.

bass drum - I think that the sound that you want has more to do with size of drum, head choice, and muffling than the particular brand.....my bass drum has the characteristics that you're looking for [deep, solid, resonant, pushes alot of air] - it's a Yamaha Beech Custom 22x18 bass drum with a Remo Powerstroke head tuned kinda loose on the batter side and a Remo black resonant on the front...for muffling I only use a rollled up towel sitting against the bottom of the batter head...

HHs - I tend to prefer Zildjians....and 14" New Beats are kinda standard...go with 13" if you like a higher pitched, bit more controlled sounding hats....Zildjian Quick Beats will give you more 'chick' when closed....but, personally, I don't think that they sound as good as New Beats played open - your best bet is to go to a local Guitar Center or somewhere with a good selection and try out different hihats...since it's really just a matter of personal taste..

snare - sounds like you want something with some depth tuned nice and tight??

as far as a kick with no tom mounts....I think maybe that you're probably only going to be able to get that with 'Custom' drums (drum lines that you can purchase individual pieces from)....eg. DW, Pearl Masters Custom, Yamaha Custom, etc.... you may even want to check out a custom drum builder (eg. Phattie) and have them make exactly what you want for about the same price as a bass from one of the manufacuturers that I listed above...plus you can get the custom guys to put on exactly what heads you want instead of getting the drum and immediately dishing out $40 for a new bass drum head...

don't know about the combo crash/ride...maybe look into a heavier, larger crashes (18" and up) - I once had a 20" Zildjian A Medium Crash that sounded killer as both a crash and a ride....once again - your best bet is to go to the music store and check out what they have

i try a deep 'brady' 13" snare, that'll really bust your ear drums

as far as hi hats go (and all other cymbals) do not buy these over the internet or over the phone or mail order, make sure that the ones you buy you have hit with a stick personally, you can put two sets of brand new new-beats together and they will both sound different..... don't be afraid to mix and match hi-hats, they will be an important part of your sound....pratt is right about 13" hats too, they can make 14"s sound like mashed potato....

i woundn't go for a combo crash/ride, as this will only give you the worst of both worlds.... an important factor is how hard you hit.... soft hands? 16" thin crash, 20" med thin ride... heavy hands? 20" med crash.... 22" med heavy ride...... imo, generally crash cymbals lose their character if you go amy heavier than medium, but then again there are all different types of players looking for all different types of sounds....

....and that my friend is why any advice we give you is totally bias to any of our own styles of playing....so you gotta get out there and start cracking some cymbals and hitting a few skins until you find a sound you like hope this helps

you probably wont find your dream kit at shitty guitar stores. You might want to consider a custom drum manufacturer. There's a handful and can offer drums very similar cost-wise to DW's and Tama Starclassic maple. www.medicineman.cc, C&C drums, there's more...just do a search.
