I've been planning to sort myself out a nice PC, a couple of soundcards and a 24 track mixer. But today I was producing a band in a fully Pro Tools studio. This was the first time I've worked with Pro Tools and it just shits on everything else from a great height. It's amazing and a total idiot could use it. As I did today. ;) It's the best thing I've produced so far. The problem is now that I want Pro Tools more than anything else in the whole wide world.

So the question is - What is the cheapest Pro Tools set up that I can get?

God damn. My plans were all sorted but Pro Tools changed them all. I have some homework to do.

Ahhhh, another one has converted to the Pro Tools family...welcome! Mbox is cheaper than the 001, though. Plus, the 001 is fair old now. The Mbox would work well if you are planning on just doing some fun home/self recording. However, it only has 2 mic pres and it's USB connected. The 002 is the next step up from that and it has 4 mic pres, 4 line ins, 8 ADAT in and 2 SPIDF....so this gives you 18 in. But, the price of this is going to cost you a little over $1000. I think it's well worth it though

Hmm, so many questions.

Basicly I want to be recording bands on this set up so I'm going to need at least 8 ins.

Can anyone recommend a Pro Tools system to me? Imagine I have nothing except microphones and speakers right now and £2,500 cash.

Well, if you want to go with the 001 you can find it on ebay for around 500 USD...don't know how much that is in British pounds. The 001 only has 2 mic pres though, so chances are you'll probably need a preamp. After that I'd suggest the newer 002 for a little over $1000. Gives you 4 pres, like I said before. Now, if you plan on using the 001, know that it will not work with any version of Pro Tools above 6.4. I think 6.4 is the highest they have right now, but if they upgrade, you won't be able to get it. Good luck.

So if I got the 002 and some pre amps (or a mixer) I'd be set to record 8 channels at a a time?

Is 002 upgradeable? I mean could I buy another rack unit (or whatever it is) and get 16 tracks in?

Yeah, get those pres and you should be ready to go.
As far as using dual 002s in one system, theoretically, I think you could...although I've never tried it. As long as you have separate firewire ports. You probably should ask Digidesign about it though. According to their site you can do up to 32 tracks of simultaneous recording and playback. So I don't see why you couldn't.

I got one!

I bought the Digi 001 Rack from Sweetwater.com for $1100 this month. It is absolutely fantastic! Coming from Sonor, I almost shat myself when I first opened up PT. But using the ProTools book by David Franz from Berkley Press has made the transition very smooth in just a few weeks. I all makes such sense now. Specific 002 question would best be answered at the digidesign user conference. Its in the support section of digidesign.com.

Regarding the 8 chanels of audio, It seems many guys use the PResonus DigiMax and are pretty happy. http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/DigiMax96/

I use a yamaha 01V digital mixer and then use the ADAT lightpipe to get the 8 tracks over to the digi. However, it does limit me to 44.1khz and 20 bit recording. How much does that matter? I bet by the time I'm good enough at this stuff for it to matter, there will be 10.1 surround mixing with 512 bit recording!!!

Good luck dude! And enjoy the ride!!!

I am planning to buy the 002 rack one of the following weeks! When you don't want to pay so much more for the hardware controller, it is the way to go.

It comes with pro tools LE, has 4 pre amps, 4 line ins and ADAT in out. With ADAT equiped premamps (like The Behringer ADA8000, which is only around 300 $) you have an extra 8 I/O.

Man pro tools is the way to go... i just got the mbox, my entry into home recording and its unreal ive already been doing full band demos with just that so imigine what u can do with the digi002 or sumin... not trying to steal ur thread thingy, but if i hook up a mic preamp or mixer to my mbox i can use more than 2 friggin mics... that be great im micing drums with 2 mics right now for some lil demos obviously 2 mics isnt the best but its sitll comes out real good, i would love to step up to more mic lines, without buying a whole new interface... Heres a recording of my band, i did that with just 2 mics on the drums, it would sound killer if i could use more mics omg it be awesome!
