I want another 8 preamps

I record our band practices live- full drums, 2 guitars, 1 bass, 3 vocals.

Right now, I have (2) 1010lt cards. I have a Soundcraft M8 mixer- I have the direct outs from all 8 channels going into one of the 1010lt's. I rigged up my old Behri board (an 802 maybe, I dont even know- but it isnt staying, so it doesnt matter :p) to run 2 of its preamps into a couple channels on the second 1010 card. That lets me run the whole band with 4 mics on drums. Its nice because the M8 is also my PA mixer, so I can route the channels with vocals into my power amp and I can route ALL the channels independently to the computer. I'm reasonably satisfied with the quality of the recordings, but I'd really like to get mics on the toms.

So, I need another 8 (or at least 4) channels of preamp. I think I can spend up to $600 or $700. I'd like something at least as nice as the M8's pres.

So I'm looking at maybe an Octane or one of the various similar Presonus units or maybe the Studio Projects 828. I've been looking around and it seems like the least expensive way to get a rack with 8 pres is to get a firewire interface like the FP10 or the Art TubeFire8- both of which are ~$400. The computer I record with now doesnt have firewire, and I really like my M8 so even if I switch interfaces, somehow I want to keep the M8.

What I dont understand is why the standalone rack preamps like the Presonus D8 or FS8 cost so much more than the FP10 when they have the same preamps (XMAX). I see they have ADAT out (which I don't have a use for currently), but is that better than the firewire connection assuming I had a way to connect it to my computer?

ANYWAY, any thoughts or product recommendations would be appreciated. If the diff in quality justifies, I could be persuaded to spend my budget on 4 nicer preamps instead of 8 lesser preamps. Pretty much these additional pres will be used for drums. Should I just say f**k it and buy a bunch of Art Tube MP's?
(kidding! :D)

Now, I'm thinking, maybe I'll get rid of the two 1010lt cards and get something like the Presonus FireStudio or the Focusrite Saffire 26 or pro40. Then I get the 8 preamps in the interface and I can get something to convert the Soundcraft to ADAT and rout that into the interface for the rest of the preamps.

Any thoughts? Any experience with these units? Would I be better off sticking with the 1010lt cards with higher quality pres?

If I can find an old ADAT unit will that work to convert my M8's direct outs to ADAT? What about something like the Behringer ADA8000 http://pro-audio.musiciansfriend.co...A8000-Ultragain-Pro8-ADA-Converter?sku=182483 . As a rule, I stay away from anything Behringer in my signal path, but I've read that this may be a tolerable exception.

Halp!

If you can do 4 pres, I'd look for a Sytek, a couple of RNP's, etc.
If you need 8, I'd consider one of these:

I think you can use it standalone (as pres rather than as a FW interface), plus some extra pres from somewhere. I saw someone selling an M4 (used) for $250 somewhere...
I've also seen the Mackie Onyx 1220 mixers going for around $300-400 used (I know I sold mine somewhere in that range). You have to use the inserts as direct outs, but the pres are good.

Or maybe a MOTU 8pre.

I know the 1010lt's arent the *best* thing out there, so I guess I see an opportunity to upgrade my converters while I'm at it.

Am I smoking dope with the ADAT thing? I've never used anything with an ADAT connection, but I'm guessing the quality of the AD converter in whatever I use to get the M8 to ADAT will have some bearing on the quality of sound.

I checked ebay for the Sytek, and nothing.

Antichef, I was looking at that Octane too, but if I can get equivilent preamps AND updgrade my converters at the same time... Sometimes I think I think too much. :D
