I have the Behringer with Jensons in it.. Great cab for the money. I've done 3 tours with it already and I'm about to do a month with it. The input on the back is starting to get a little picky.. but after three years, I'm not complaining. My guitarist and I are working on getting Avatar cabs.

I'm not a fan of the Matshall AVT series.. but it'll work fine. Try to look for some GOOD deals on nice heads. I got my Peavey 5150 for $200. You can find them.. trust me.

Use the crate cab until you can afford something better. The key word there is 'afford', not 'have enough to get the bare minimum POS that is big but probably only sounds $2 better than the crate.'
 
can't comment on the behringer cab but.............hey, it might hold up. if the cab you have now is the one that matches that little crate head, toss it. that cab sounds pretty bad, just as bad as the head. i tried running a couple of different decent sounding heads through that cab and they all sounded bad.

what type of speakers would you reccomend?
 
I had the vintage 30's in a mesa 4x12 cab that sounded good. that was back in my metal days. you might ask around or contact avatar about what type of speakers you should go with if you decide to get one of their cabs.
 
seriously look at an EBAY TUBE HEAD. a JCM900 is the real deal.
 
personally, i hate the way a jcm900 sounds. just my opinion. it might be good for punk though.
 
for $800 it's probably gonna be a solid state amp unless you can find a sweet deal.

Plenty of marshall and mesa tube deals to be had in that price range. You typically will have to look for a 50w version but if its true tube its more power than you probably need anyways.

Thats a completely subjective question but I would say that most Tube marshall heads sound better than any of the models such as Avt and Valvestates (with a few exceptions of course).
You should check out Marshall Jcm 900 or 800 (do some reading, there are literally dozens of models) or something along the lines of a Mesa Nomad. These all fall into your used price range and are rocking amps IMHO.
 
The JCM looks kind of plain.
the AVT has tons of features and seems very right for me.
And im thinking about getting the behringer cab,
or scrounging pawn shops when i get money.
The crate will hold me over, but as soon as i get the head, im off to the pawn shop to sell the whole half stack and old guitars to get some cash for the cab.
The avatars look amazing and im thinking about one of those!

50 Watt is plenty for a tube amp through a half stack. I aint ever got close to half way in volume on my JCM2000 DSL50 wth 1960 4x12 and im gigging most weeks in a heavy rock band!
Go tube all the way. Safe with a Marshall (really nice) or try ORANGE for a deeper but muddier tone. MESA BOOGIE also a bit deeper and muddier. FENDER crisp clean, but not too great for distortion in my ears as sounds a bit thin.
Never heard a CARVIN but I have just recently heard about them through this forum. Would have to try them first.

I wish i could trade all my Solid State amplification for just one Marshall...won't f'n happen. There is a reason people glorify tubes.

You can probably get a lot more out of your equipment by putting it on ebay, or at least the classified board here.

It is the sound that you should be worried about. Im not going to sit here and debate why one completely destroys the other because it is completely subjective. Just keep in mind that the AVT will probably have very little resale value by the time you realize that you want to get a real Marshall. The JCM on the other hand will still be worth what you paid for it in a few years.
 
is the $800 before you sell your current amp? if so, I would do like others suggested and buy a nice head first. tubes are the shit. no two ways about it. solid state power amps just don't hold up in a band situation, imho. 50 watts is plenty until you're running "multiple" cabs and playing really big gigs. i would seriously rethink getting a hybrid or solid state head if you can afford it. maybe you can afford to get a nice tube head with the $800, sell your current rig and get a avatar cabinet? i don't know your situation. btw, scratch my remark about the jcm 900. that amp just is'nt my style but it would probably be a fine amp for punk. i should'nt have even made a remark about that head at all. like wireneck said, you could always resell it without losing much or no money and try something else. who cares if the head is plain jane. you wanna sound like a rocker or a space ship?
