under 800 dollars for a pop punk band.
im using a MIM tele with a hot rail pick up in it.

suggestions and recommendations please?

for $800 it's probably gonna be a solid state amp unless you can find a sweet deal. I've heard some decent punk guitar through a Peavey transtube. What do you have now?

a shitty crate tube halfstack.

any links for suggestions?

thanks man.

I picked my jcm 800 100 watt for $800 :D . If you want a tube amp, you might want to try out some B-52's. I get good reviews from my friend.

Maybe something from the Marshall AVT series? What sound are you looking for?

Good luck!

i feel your pain about the crate amp. it's not one of those undersized heads and cabinents is it? those are the worst of the bunch. i've owned a few solid state crate amps, all of which sounded like a dog's ass.

theres some transtube heads at musiciansfriend.com in the $400-500 range. and then theres always ebay.

those are nice.

If you visit their discussion boards, I'm sure someone can fix you up with some clips.

And there's this, $1370.

Also consider a 2 x 12 combo. Save a lot of $ with that. This is $300.

I use the avt 50 head with a 1960a cab the avt cabs suck balls but the avt50 thru the 1960 is real sweet. I also own a blue voodoo half stack that I can't stand compared to the marshall half stack.

you have the worst half stack that crate ever made. i owned one so i know. it should be illegal for them to make that crap. for a solid state high gain amp, those transtube and marshalls are'nt too bad. find a music store that carries them and try them out. the old style crate heads, like the g130c, with a normal size cabinet does'nt sound too bad either but they are pretty notorious for input jacks that need resoldering, which is no big deal. you could find one of those heads for probably under $200.

you should be warned, a.p.l. is a Carvin pimp. I've never played a Carvin amp so I can't comment on their tone but I do know that anytime anyone asks for suggestions on gear, here comes a.p.l. to pimp some Carvin goods. A.P.L, have you tried any other brands?

Yes, but the other gear gets mentioned a lot. Many don't know that Joe Walsh, Steve Vai, and the late Frank Zappa and others are quite enthusiastic about Carvin gear. Did you?

I say "consider". I don't say "Buy Carvin, everything else is crap."

Judging by the original poster's reaction, he was unaware of Carvin amps.

put all your money in the head. beg borrow ebay a real head. and pick up a bargain 4x12. you can swap speakers in the cab later. check out eminence speakers. if you wind up spending 800 on a head and cab that suck you'll be out 8 bills, if you buy a used killer head and a cheap 4x12 you still have a killer head at the end of the day.

you might bid on a marshall jcm900 and get one for 700

Exactly what I was thinking. A Behringer 400 watt 4X12 is only 200 bucks. That leaves you with enough cash left over to buy something cool, like a used 5150.

He has a cab already, even though it's a crate. That should get him through until he gets some money. As for the head, nearly every pop punk band I've seen uses either Marshall or Mesa/Boogie, and since the Mesas are outta your price range, a nice Marshall head will give you all pop punk power you'll need. Here's one for new that fits nicely in your budget:

My friend owns one and it plays pretty nicely for a SS amp.

that marshall looks nice and got great reviews, any suggestions on cabs?
just use my shitty crate one in the mean time?

okay, so that marshall looks REALLY good.
i bid on a couple on ebay.
im just wondering about the cab nonsense.

and if you dont mind, whats the difference between the much cheaper AVT50H compared to this one? just wonderinnn

Seriously, that Behringer cab is not a bad idea. I use it and it's working just fine for me. It's a little bright on the highs, but that's really the only negative I can think of to say about it. Remember...400 watts. Baddabing...
