I put these up a while back but since then I've tweaked them a little in the computer. My goal was to make it as subtle as possible. Can you hear any F'ed up "mastering" mistakes?

Thanks,
RF

The Songs

Wow, that was quick. Or did you even see my post to you in the drum forum? ;)

Listening now...

We fiddle with Lowrider too, fun song to jam on. Man the guitarist has some chops for sure, reminds me alot of our guitarist actually. Nice percussion, I like the sound of the panned accents. Drums sound pretty nice overall, maybe a little quiet, but I'm a drummer and want to hear 'em loud and clear. Nice job on this cover (where's the singing? ;) )

Now "Lemonade" is pretty cool. The lyrics are a little literal for my taste, but that's preference. That acoustic sound in the beginning is great, I like the panning. Vocals sound nice and everything is mixed well IMO. Good drumming and a nice drum sound again. Wish I could get my kit sounding like this through mics, grumble grumble. Good song and nice work all in all, thanks  :D

I'll give you some stars to start out with.....

Listening to the two songs, can you tell that the drums are the exact same set in the exact same room or do they sound different? I didn't tune them differently but I tried to mix them appropriately for the song at hand.

Thanks,
RF

To me they sounded like the same kit tuning-wise, but not the same sound overall. In the original song (sorry, I forgot the name) they were more present and driving IMO.

I remember "Low-Rider" from the first time you posted it.I have the copy some damn where...I'll have to compare the 2....this sounds like it has a helluva lot more stereo imaging to it than the original.....I could be imagining things.......I need to compare them to be sure.........drums and rhythm track on this version are so spread out and sweet sounding.

This sounds damn good to me.If I could master my tunes this good in Sound Forge I would go out and buy a copy tomorrow.

Listened to Lemonade... I'm impressed by the studio-like mix, this really sounds great. IMHO the drums volume is OK, I won't put it louder or more upfront.

This is personnal matter but I think there are too much FX on vocals, especially for the acoustic intro. I would decrease the reverb a bit.

After 1:26 the mix and effects are just perfect, really well-balanced! :)

Now listening to Low Rider... Drums and bass sound much different than in Lemonade, really the same set/room?? :O It sounds cleaner, less 'real'...

The panning on percussions is fine, it brings some enhancement to the stereo image.

The guitar solo sounds really good, I would put it more upfront and use more panning to differentiate guitar solos from bass+drums. I like your distorted sound which is has very good sustain... Could you tell me how you'd record this one? I would say that there's at least a tube pre-amp here, but if you say that this is miked amps I would believe you! Quite hard to get larsen capabilities on direct inputs, so? :D

Just a word about the end: the fade on a drum solo is OK, the percussions are a little bit too loud.

Thanks for all the input (again)!

Djool_fr- Thanks for the input on the guitar panning. I'll certainly experiment with that in the future. The guitar was recorded with the good ol' 57 on a Marshall 4x12 with a Guitar that my friend bought that day or the day before. I can't remember now. Back when it was recorded, I had no idea what a preamp was (outside of the Mackie input strip.

Kramer- I donno.... Maybe the computer somehow enhanced the stereo field. If what you are talking about is different, that was an accident.... perhaps a biproduct of putting it through Sound Forge.?.? Thanks for the kind words.

Barometer- No vox on that one. We did that so the guitar player could try his new ax! He felt like a star. I layed all the rythym tracks and all he had to do was come in and play his guitar. What a ham!:D

Thanks again,
RF

excellent job on lemonade. the drums were about as good they get. I liked the guitars and how they weren't in my face. that left a lot of good "space".

Low Rider was cool. I didn't care for the flanged/phased guitar. And I would have liked a little more verb on the guitar. Am I nitpicky bastard or what? Eitherway, the mix and performance was excellent. What is your guitar set-up? I really dug the settings for lemonade.

Thanks you nitpicky bastard! :D :D :D
Thanks for your words..... The guitar for Lemonade was a crappy acoustic that cost about $150 at GC. It went straight to the board(mackie 32-8). We only had one effect going on the entire tune. It was from a Midiverb IV and the preset was #49 (my favorite to use back then). Lemonade was supposed to be EXACTLY what you said.... not in your face! Thank you for noticing that. It was supposed to be just a kick back relaxing song about well....Kicking back and drinking Lemondade! :D
The electric git on Lemonade was PRS straight into the board also.

I couldn't tell you the setting Low Rider. That one happen so fast! I can't even remember what guitar it was.

Thanks again,
RF

hey rf, I'm battling a fever right now so my ears can't be trusted.. It sounds pretty damn good from what I can tell though.. I remember these both, and I think they have improved a lot.. Excellent guitar playing, and nice drums on low rider too..

Thanks Sabbath..... I'm trying to learn Sound Forge and I'm getting to the point where I can use the tools without "over mastering". I haven't normalized these and I'm trying to avoid it at all cost.

Thanks

RF

Lemonade is happenin'. Lowrider was ok....just a jam really....but Lemonade is cool. It's a good song and the performance is good. I liked the vocals, both lead a bkgrnd and the rhythm guitar is cool....a very nice tune, I like it a lot.
