Getting better
After finding my V69 defective, I was able to get the seller to refund my money. Now, I have decided to "move up" to an Audio Technica 4047SV.

I haven't had the opportunity to hear this mic, but I have found nothing but praise about it here and elsewhere. Have any of you used it for vocals? What are its strengths and weaknesses? Any tips for use? Do you agree that it's a clear step up from Marshall-level mics?

Fab

I'd like to know what you think compared to your Marshalls.

I have an AT4040 and MXL V67M. I'm kinda thinking the AT4047 is too close to AT4040 my AT4040 to warrant the cost.

Yeah, I was considering the 4040 as well, but I keep hearing that the 4047 is rounder, fuller, perhaps bigger.... my own voice being rather lame-o, it responds well to the kind of boost that this seems to describe. I think I sound better than I am on a Marshall V67, and I am hoping the 4047 will be the creme de la creme for me. I also have the Marshall V77, which is a clean-sounding tube microphone, in my view. I really like it, too, and I'm hoping that between the 4047 and the V77 I will have my options covered vocally.

BTW, I have a Groove Tubes MD1B FET that I recently purchased. I really like that sound on my voice, too - not hyped in the high end, rather beefy but also clear. Still, my 4047 may be too close to the MDB1 for me to keep both. I posted that it was for sale earlier in the for-sale forum, but no one was interested. I found that odd, as there's a lot of buzz about that mic around here.

Who knows - I may need to keep all three! (Plus the RE16 and Shure 545 dynamics I bought from Chessparov).

How much you sellin' it for?

C'mon Chess.....

..... it's your birthday and you know you want it.

;)

Treat yourself and then tell us your impressions of the FET version compared to the Tube.

Fab, that AT is very well respected.
IIRC Full Compass may still be having a sale on that model-worth a look.
If my bedroom "studio" sounded better, would seriously consider your GT.

Surprised that no one snagged that one yet...

Chris

P.S. Betcha that the GT and 4047 will sound quite different.
(both excellent most likely)

I think so too, Warhead.

I found it on at the Rec Pit ..... I think.

Someone had a whole bunch of quotes and annecdotes.

Thanks for the replies.
Big Kenny, I sent u an email.

Full Compass is where I ordered it from. I won't receive it till next week but I will definitely share my impressions.

Chessparov, my "vocal booth" is a closet filled with clothes..... pretty quiet but very dead, too. Someday, I'll have a real space to record in.... some day.

Fab, IMHO seriously consider getting at least a pair of Ethan Winer's MicroTraps. His website is www.realtraps.com
And you already know how helpful he is, his forum is at www. musicplayer.com if you have any acoustical questions.

That should substantially improve your sonics much more than "which microphone" now that you already have fine vocal mics in the 545, RE16,
and the upcoming 4047. If and when I get another condenser for home recording, I plan on getting a pair of MicroTraps too.

Chris

That's a great idea. I confess, I've been putting off dealing with my room, mainly because G.A.S. has taken hold! Plus, I don't really understand acoustics and it seems so complicated to learn. (I know, an intellectually LAZY, LAME position, but there it is).

Are the micro traps small enough to fit around a vocal mic?

I'll check out the website. Thanks again Chessparov.

Did anyone else have any experience with the 4047? I want to hear your thoughts/tips, etc.

hey, dont knock that closet full of clothes. perfectly nice dead space. you can move the clothes around to change the deadening/vivifiying.

mmm... closet of clothes. screw a vocal booth. you can't store clothes in it. what is the use? mic stands?

Fab, the great thing about the MicroTraps is that they are movable,
and will work well for tracking vocals.
Just move a pair around the microphone until it sounds "good".

Trust me, contact Ethan and he'll be very cool about answering any of your questions. Otherwise a sensitive condenser's performance will be curtailed.
My room, for example, has the typical flutter echoes and room "modes" caused by standing waves. Otherwise I would have kept my SP B1.

Chris

P.S. Eel, my closet at home seems to sound too boxy and boomy...

Formerlyfzfile, I went to high school in the late '50's in Riverside CA where Joe Pine got his infamous start on the AM radio station there. He was noted for insulting his guests and stirring up controversy...sort of the small-market equivalent of Rush in his day. Your quoting him took me right back!

...so now you're probably asking yourself, "How can lpdeluxe be that old?"

Gee, I don't have an answer to that.
