I think I hit a plateau

The band is happier than a pig in shit with these recordings but honestly I think my skills are leveling off a little. I've been getting better and better with every session, and I got this mixes done in a very short amount of time but I just feel like they might be lacking something. Now I know the snare absolutely blows goat balls but the drummer insists on using his shitball piccollo and then wants it all beefy/rock sounding. Anyway any constructive criticism or maybe just a stroke of the ole' shaft errrr......ego might help me get through this roadblock. Oh this was also my first time recording a mesa dual rec which turned out to be the bitch everyone says it is. Anyway, all thoughts and comments are welcome and demanded.

Come on, give it to me. Give it to me like Bubba in the state pen.

Sounds as good as it can get on myspace. Do you have better quality mp3s to listen to? Hard to judge on myspace quality. Id love some quality (at least 192bit) mps's or waves to play on my audiophile quality home stereo. Then I can judge it properly.

Cast the Stone is on my website www.jscstudios.com It should be a much better mp3 you'll just have ignore the other songs on there, they still need a little more mastering work.

Dude, the fact that you question yourself means you're on the right track.

I feel as if I've hit the end of the road every time I fiish a song, and then I start wondering if I've been fooling myself all this time into thinking I have any talent at all. A few months later, I'm able to go back and seperate the good songs from the shit ones. :)

I hear nothing wrong with this recording. Even the Piccolo snare ain't that bad. The kik is clicky for my taste, but I realise that's what this style needs most of the time.

Good job. Really good job.

cant seem to pull up a myspace page now for some reason. ALL music sounds like ass on myspace.

I think the vocals sound good, and the bass sounds real good.
I am hearing some distortion/clipping type noise. I am going to assume that is probably a myspace issue.

I think the weak parts are the drums, and the fact that the guitars lack some meat on the low end. They sound a little thin. The snare needs some balls, and the kick too, I think. Overall mix is good though.

The drummer really does want to join TOOL doesn't he!
Apart from the intro & bass breaks it reminds me of Paw's Jessie.
I'd liek some thud in the bass drum rather than click.
I'd also like a less generic guitar sound but that's asking too much I know.
Nah, you work is good. You've recorded them well & pointed out the limitations - the rest is up to them.

It's very TOOL....mix is awesome! I think the arrangement could be better, their problem not yours. I love the vox. Howd you get that radio-style lo-fi echo? You know, the effect Soundgarden use in Spoonman?

I went ahead and listene dto the other tunes anyways. They fucking rock. Especially the acoustic song.

Sounds really good man. Just curious what you used for the vocal doubling, an effect or just 2 takes. I have never found a good doubler that sounds anywhere near as good as just doing 2 takes.

I agree about the snare, but that is their deal really... Kick sounds apropriate for the music, same with the guitar and bass... Everything is pretty much spot on.

The lofi effect was a combo of a dry vocal track and a bullhorn track. The doubling effect is in fact just two tracks. It's cool you guys liked the mixes, I was really unsure of them and myself. I'm actually going to go back and fix a few things based on some of your suggestions. Thanks for everyone's feedback, I actually debated showing these mixes to you guys because I was so scared they sounded like total shit. I'll still take any criticism or remarks anyone wants to give. I'm just trying to get over this hump.

Hey Jon

I wanted to say something about this when I listed to cast the stone the other day, but you didn't ask for criticism.

since you are now though, there is a bunch of clipping on the whole track. I assume it happened during mastering though.

other than that it sounds good, and considering that just about everything else that's being released commercially is about that clipped too it might not be something you should even worry about.

If you listened on my website you almost definately heard clipping, that's already been taken care of on my end. I'll probaby have the remixed songs up on a week or so. And actually I was asking for critism from the get go.

I did listen on your website. can't wait to hear the remixed songs

Yeah for whatever retarded reason I thought it was a real swell idea to push the mix on my website way beyond where it should've been.
