EDIT. Mix 2

You have a cool, bluesy voice, and I love the groove.

You'll probably get some comments about the cymbals, but I kinda like the sound. To me, the missing element is a more prominent rhythm section ... thumpier bass and kick, big snare. Guitar sounds a bit thin when it comes in with those few little riffs -- nice tone ... just feel the track needs some EQ.

Cool song, has a nice feel to it.
I agree with the other comment as well . . . the rhythm section could be a little bit more powerful. But anyways this is a great mix. Good job!

Can you compress the drums a little harder please? Lol. That's what it sounds like to me anyway. Not a bad effect for the song though. It kind of works in a weird tripping out way. The song is a bit, a lot, repetitive, but the whoa-oh breakdown is a nice touch. The mix is what it is. There's things about it i don't like, but that's my own personal preference. Besides the crazy drum processing, it's pretty solid to me.

I screwed up by running the mix thru Ozone. The wrong way. Should have just posted the DAW mix. Thanks for the comments.

Cool tune, the the snare sounds like it was high passed at 1K or something. A nice deep cracky snare would add a great feeling of authority to the rhythm section. Sample replacement may be your friend here.

Thanks for commenting JG.
It's a comedy of errors. I was getting too much HH from the snare mic so I pushed the mic down toward the shell. That actually helped. But when I Ozoned it the next day, whatever Ozone did brought the HH back along with a lot of other nasties.

New mix done this evening. Sorry for being so self absorbed but I could not let that first mix stand.

I think this is as close to dialed in as I can get.

Thanks

Listening to the second mix (didn't listen to the first.)

I agree on the repetition. (exactly why I don't listen to much blues! :D )

A few of the crashes are really loud relative to everything else.

Greg's right; the bridge is the best part. Nice use of xylophone! (or whatever those things are called)

Thanks VHS. Yes it does tax the listener but I'm going for sonic balance. It was something to do on a dreary Saturday in February. You know, set up the mics and start playing. The cymbal hits are still a challenge. After a while I just let it rock out. Personally I still don’t understand what cymbal hits mean. Like, are they flash bulbs, or fireworks or a moment of brilliant insight? I only throw them in because of my programming.

The bridge, like it all, was not planned. After too many bars of EDA I went to a traditional jazz pattern. Some of the early takes are hysterical especially the chunky guitars trying to find the chords. So I added a count-in slate and they only play the first chord. I had nothing going there till it hit me to add 8 tracks of vocal woe woes like an old Tom Jones tune. The instrument chiming in is a Glockenspiel. I think I will add cow bell and tambourine someday.

Thanks for listening and commenting. I need to get to your tune soon before the tone has flown.

I like the sound stage and mix, great space, but it does get a bit robotic by the end.

Tune's pretty cool.
Drums are a bit jumpy with their timing at times, they could groove a bit more with the rest, esecially the bass. Cymbals sound a bit too overpowering to me. Otherwise I didn't think the mix was too bad.

Yeah joey I was on my last leg literally last night and finally gave up the ghost and let the flubs be.

Thanks for stopping by.

I listened to mix two. I thought the sounds were pretty good.

I thought the overheads were a little out front. Some sibilance in cymbals - mainly the high-hat. Good snare and kick sound.

You might be able to nudge the bass up a bit.

Guitars sound good. Too much reverb on them for my tastes. Good playing.

Vocal sounds good.

The BGV's starting around 3:00 are loud. they're also harsh sounding. A bit tough on the ears. The harmonies were nice. Just kind of midrangey.

Hey Trip. Yeah I am still trying to dial in these drums. The HH is mostly technique I think. If I hit it with the tip of the stick near the bell I get a nice tick with a bit of bell ring. But invariably I side stick the hats and get that little washy sibilant sound. Same with the big cymbals, if I hit them gently they sit pretty well but as you noted I didn’t always succeed. Plus I blame the mp3 conversion. :)

I’ll recheck those BGVs I seem to remember pushing the LPF so that may have sharpened them up too much. After hours of drumming my head is pretty fried to subtleties like these so thanks for mentioning that.

I kind of am digging the heavy guitars, I may be on the verge of djent is some spots. I laid the mic on the floor as I didn’t have a boom stand so the tone could be better. Funny thing about the verb, once I apply it I can’t hardly stand to take it off.

Thanks for the spin.

New mix, re-tracked drums and addressed all comments, except the reverb one. Sorry Trip I'm hooked.

Last pass. Appreciate notes of anything that strikes you as being overboard.

There is cow bell and a double time switch up in this. Yes it's true.

TIA guys.
