Ok as a surprise to my boyfriend who is a documentary film maker, I want to set the pc up for him to record the music for his sound tracks on. He would mostly be using a guitar and a keyboard. I tried looking software up on the web, and I just got confused, could someone help me out and tell me what I need?

Thanks

Hey, first, how much money are you looking to spend? All you'd need is an interface, some kind of software, a preamp, and a dynamic microphone. There's plenty of software out there that are cheap programs that will probably be enough for him, the best dynamic for the $$ is the sm-57, i don't think anyone would disagree with that, and a good cheap pre is the VTB-1, which runs around $50-60 used if you're willing to shop around. The interface, well, there's plenty that are dirt cheap if you look on musiciansfriend, but my opinion is that if you get the cheap cheap ones, you're just wasting your money, and are better off dishing out the $100 to get a used Delta 44. Which reminds me, is he using a laptop? the delta won't work with it because you need to install a piece of hardware, so you'd have to go another route, probably through a firewire port. Anyways, hope this helps!

you'll need some sort of interface, basically something he can plug a microphone, or keyboard into.

on top of this, you'll need some sort of software, depending on your price range....there are MANY options out there

a budget of some nature would really be helpful!
