Somewhere I promised photos of my budget-friendly "Frankendesk" - Here's one...

FrankenDesk

I can't remember what detail I was going into here, SO:

Yes, it got rid of that nasty reflection I was getting on my left and yes, the total build cost (including the desk and the racks) was under $200.

Yes, that's my POD Pro in one of the racks and yes, it will soon be replaced by a Manley Vari-Mu. Although I still want it (the POD) handy (it's nice to just jam once in a while to clear the mind).

Yes, those are those cheepo ADJ power switches and YES, I've hidden the logos. And NO, they're no being used instead of my cascading power conditioners - They're just for handy switching.

Yes, I'll try to get a wide-angle unit in here to shoot it with. I'd love to get a "fish-eye" lens, but this room is tough to shoot - Most of the lighting is indirect, and I HATE flashes. We'll see... Working on a new brochure soon.

And yes, if I figure out where and what forums I've mentioned this in one way or another, I'll point them to this thread. :D

Looks good, but where do you put the 96 ounce cup of coffee?

Looks nice Massive.

What are all those monitors?

sweet...lookin' nice. mind if I take the photo and put it on my studios website and call it my own?? :p

Hey, that's really cool! Do a lot of studios do that? I think that's the first time I've seen that type of rack layout, right on top of the desk, angled toward you. Maybe I just don't pay attention. Something like that would work for me, as I don't have a lot of rack gear. Very cool....you clever DIYer.

Jason (Farview): You're right. I wish I would've left another inch on the inside. It's a bit tight. Getting used to it, though...

Bulls Hit: The hangers are M-Audio BX8's. The "mini's" are Wharfedale Diamond 8.2's. The "A" set are Bowers & Wilkins M-802-S3's. IMHO, probably the greatest speakers on the planet. Wouldn't trade 'em for anything that I couldn't sell to buy another pair of them.

Christopher Dawn: After I blew all my cash, I realized that I didn't have enough left for a wide-angle lens.

bennychico11 & xfinsterx:   ;)

EleKtriKaz: Well, Argosy and a few others make similar designs, but I haven't seen any that keep a nice tight area like this. Don't get me wrong - Tip to tip, that desk is 2" wider than an Argosy D-15. However, with this, I don't have to move an inch off center to get to all the controls.

Other than that, I'm really not much of a DIY'er. This was just something that was really important to me. It's just as (if not slightly more) effective, slightly less "cool," but $1300 less than the Argosy. That's actually the first time I ever did anything other that make a straight slice using a table saw.

And thank Gawd it worked... Geez, I'd have been pissed...

that desk looks sweet especially for just 200 bucks impressive

Nice John!

I'm using the Argosy Dual-15 with a flybridge (for center speaker), which is a nice workstation. The only complaint I have is that I wish they had left more room under the desk for a sub.

I noticed that your using the Auralex bass traps in the corner, shouldn't that be a bit further away from the wall?

Rad desk John. (Pout) I need to build me a real desk for real useage in my studio. My current situation is too clutterd for my clear thinking ways.

Oh well of to Lowes i go....

Did you laminate the surface??

Nope - That's just a $150 ($100 on sale) desk from Office Depot (or Office Max... Can't remember). Obviously, it's designed to face the corner, but that's what I liked about it - The work area was in the center (unlike a lot of corner desks that still face the worker at a side wall).

Cool. Cuz you inspired me to go build me a desk.

What Racks are those that you cut to fit on top?

I think I can get away with building one with 2-12 space racks underneath (just CAD'ed it out :) )

And 2-6spc racks up above like you did here. :)

Very nice John. I really like that it's clean and organized - ship shape!

rpe

The top racks used to be a single Middle Atlantic 6-space rack. A simple 30/60/90 set of cuts gave me the two units when finished - VERY low-tech. Once cut and put back together, I put them on the desk, penciled out the interior of the racks and grabbed a jig-saw. A pound of sawdust later...

Under that desk (I think it's an O'Sullivan) you can actually have a 12-space rack with wheels underneath and still have 2" of clearance (that's what I used to have here) and your CPU on the other side (or rack-mounted if you have it). Of course, I had to move it to have everything on top, but now all my two-trackers are in a 16-space rack off to the side.

John,
Do you happen to remember where you picked up that desk? That's the kind/style I was looking for (corner desk, center work area) but haven't been able to find one (online) as of yet. I went through virtually every desk at Staples, Office Max, Office Depot, etc. but couldn't find that style. Or if you happen to know for sure what company made it (O'Sullivan as you mentioned?) I might be able to find it someplace else.
Thanks!
-Krag

I'm quite sure it was an O'Sullivan from Office Depot. If I can find any more specific info on it, I'll let you know. :)

And most importantly....

...a telephone for ordering out Chinese!

You da man.

hey Massive -- looking good!

BTW: I have the same desk; $150.- at the Office Max :D
