i need help i cant figure out how to transfer midi from my mpc200xl to my recorder

What kind of recorder? It sounds like you're trying to record the audio outputs of the mpc. Just hook up the audio outputs of the mpc to the recorder, and play the sequence out. Or am I missing something?

i have a fostek recorder im in the process of upgrading all of my equipment
i have m-audio midisport cables it has a usb port on it im wondering if that could be my problem due to the fact that im not using a cpu right now

If there's no computer in the picture do as noisewreck suggests and patch the outputs of the MPC directly into the line ins of the Fostex. Midi is a control language which carries no audio of any kind so you are barking up the wrong cable when you say you are trying to use a USB connection...
