I Need to Upgrade - Best DI Box

Ok,

I currently have a Lexicon Alpha OSIO Driver and want to upgrade. I am using USB because my soundcard doesn't have a 1/8 (1/32... whatever) jack going in.

I have vista 64 bit (if that matters).

What is the best DI box (or any other way to get sound into the computer direct) for bass and electric guitar.

So I'm going to need a soundcard set-up for recording.

Is it possible to have 2 soundcards becuase that's what I'd need to do (unless one has 5.1 surround sound and is set up for recording).
 
I suppose you could see if you can find a used Apogee Mini-Me with the USB connector. I recollect that they have combo mic/line/instrument level inputs. They are discontinued, but come up from time to time. Tnjazz over on the GS board had one offered the other day for $600 or so. Excellent box for conversion and pres, although I've never used one for DI. Offhand, I can't think of a good high quality DI box with USB out. All in all, if you are interested in recording, you are likely better off looking for a decent soundcard/interface and then getting a good DI like a Reddi or a Countryman or a Radial JDI. Yes, you can usually run two soundcards in a computer, although sometimes they can be fussy about getting along. What soundcard do you have currently?

get the free gold bundle upgrade. not the "best di" money can buy, but great bang for the buck. you should be able to use it along side the alpha w/o any problem-- it's designed to play alongside other interfaces, but i'm not sure about having two usb interfaces at once. you can just disconnect the alpha while you use the gearbox and swap them as needed. if you outgrow it as a di, it still serves as the dongle for the gearbox gold bundle plugins-- many of which are useful for more than guitar.
 
I'm thinking of getting a laptop so I want to be able to hook up and record. I would disconnect often becuase I'd bring the laptop many places I go.

What about firewire? I'm not sure if laptops have firewire jacks or not.
