the band is practicing here (in my basement) Sunday and for laughs (a learning experience) i'd like to record the rehearsal just to see how well I can do. I've got a decent PC, Sonar HS 6, various mics, a small behringer mixer, a multitude of drum sets, and Roland V-Drums (I'm the drummer obviously) :)

i've never recorded more than just myself (on the drums or keys) on one track at a time...

just need some pointers on mic placement, etc

i have a small behringer also :) i got a MX602-a and i recorded a 3 piece (me and 2 friends from collage recording part of our work for the course were on)

Vocals - Mike
Bass - Put it through the di of my amp (i got away with this beacuse the direct signal from my bass kiks ass lol)
Guitar - used a dynamic mike
Drums - roland TD6, just hook it into the mixer and have it come through a pa or sterio or something

this is all good apart from i got it going onto a single track on cubase, so if you can put a compressor in the mixers effect loop, i done this and after a bit of eq and a bit more compresion and it sounded fair.

not great but put some effort into it and im sure you could make a decent track.

Assuming you plan to record all at once, spread things as much as possible and rely on a couple of well placed room mics to capture most of the sound. DI the bass and use the line out(s) from your PA to DI the vocals. This probably wont get you a very high quality recording, but it should work for a reference and give you a fairly good idea of how you really sound. There are better ways to record, this is just quick and easy and will give you a good idea of what areas you need to improve on.

thanks for the input guys.
I'll let you know how it went!
