Well, after going over my pathetic budget, I have determined that all I can afford is the Audiophile 2496.

What I need to know is this:
I have a Fostex DMT-8, which is a stand-alone DAW.
8 INS & OUTS, analog mixer.

Can I use the Audiophile 2496 in conjunction with the Fostex when recording?
In other words, can I record as if I have a breakout box 8 in/out
using the two units together?

Any advice would be simply fab.

you can....just take 2 of the outs from the fostex into the ins of the audiophile...it won't really act as a break out box simply because all the ins that you use on the fostex will be submixed into one track (stereo) going into the computer...
 
If the Fostex has a S/PDIF digital output it's possible that you might be able to route two more tracks through there and thereby get four tracks into the Audiophile... better than two, but still not eight. Some devices can't send stuff out the analog ports and the digital ports simultaneously; I'm not sure about the Fostex. I'm also assuming that the AUdiophile can record from both the analog and the digital ports simultaneously; at this proice point I'm not sure it can do that. (The SB Live cannot, you can record either from the S/PDIF or from the analog Line In, but not both simulatenously. But the Delta 66 card can do this, and the Audiophile is from the same family of products...)
 
the Audiophile can and does record from the S/PDIF inputs and analog inputs simultaneously.......that would be a maximum of 4 ins if the Fostex is capable of sending 2 tracks out the analog output and 2 tracks out the S/PDIF......
 
or sell the Fostex and throw that money in also to get the 1010lt...or do you need the Fostex for the preamps.....the 1010lt comes with 2 preamps......nice onez......

I think I need my Fostex for the pre-amps in the first two channels.

I wouldn't get much for it these days selling it, and it is portable enough to take anywhere & is crash-proof.
And it does have optical in/out & Spdif in/out.

I really want the Aardvark Q10, and there is a dude at this site who is willing to let his new one go for 500.00

I'm that broke that I can't buy my dream unit for that much. :(

Thanks for your input...I need to record ASAP and it would be weeks to even get the bucks up for the 1010lt, which would be a much better unit than the Audiophile.

I don't quite follow what you want to do Village Idiot.

Do want 2 more tracks thus having 10 total? Or do you want to use your computer somehow after the fact for mixing?

You could record the 8 on the fostex and the bounce them 2 by 2 into your computer via the audiophile into the software mulitracker you use and mix it from there.

If that's what your after. Would'nt be that hard I don't think, especially both being digital, no significant drifting. Just have a good solid 4 beat click printed at the start of each track, for easy aligning after export to the computer.

No idea if that's any help. But that would be one use of the audiophile.

That's the big part of what I want to do!
But...Will the trax recorded this way onto the Fostex BE 24 bit once they pass through the Audiophile soundacrd?
I use N-Track, and have their 24-bit capabilites.

are they 24 bit in your fostex? otherwise they would be recorded into the audiophile at 24bit, but are still 16 bit i am assuming in the fostex...so you have audio encoded at 16bit in the fostex, and then re-encoded in 24 bit into the computer...not sure how much audio would be improved though...
 
Shouldn't the audio, when converted from 16 to 24 bit, improve automatically???

no....

say for example you scan a picture on a scanner at a pretty low resolution....it may come out a little fuzzy and maybe the colors are as sharp....if you take that new scan and scan IT at a high resolution, it wont look any better....but it is at a higher resolution if you plan to do any editing to it, which will help.....but scanning it at the higher resolution will not make it look any better than the original.....

the only way to keep truly 24 bit is to record straight to the Audiophile.....
